Mosquito Fan That Listens for Mosquitoes Before It Sprays

Most mosquito repellers release their liquid all the time, whether mosquitoes are there or not, so refills run out fast. This fan waits until it hears them. On top sits a small dish that reflects sound onto a directional microphone; a motor turns the dish around and tilts it up and down, scanning the area. When the detector picks up the hum of mosquito wings, the control circuit switches on the fan and the humidifier, which mists liquid from a tank into the airflow and out through the outlet. A body-heat sensor stops or changes the spray when someone is near.

Mosquito Fan That Listens for Mosquitoes Before It Sprays - patent drawing

👂

Listens for mosquitoes

A turning dish focuses sound onto a directional microphone tuned to mosquito wingbeats.

💨

Sprays only when needed

The fan and mister start when mosquitoes are detected, instead of running all the time.

🧍

Pauses near people

An infrared body sensor stops or changes the spray when someone comes close.

🔁

Scans the area

Motors turn the dish around and tilt it up and down to cover the surroundings.

The problem

Mosquito repellers for patios and rooms - plug-in vaporizers, scented misters, fan units with a refill - mostly work on a timer or run constantly. The patent points out the weakness: the liquid is used up whether mosquitoes are present or not, so refills are bought often, and people nearby breathe the vapor all the time. It proposes a fan that only releases its liquid when it detects mosquitoes, and stops near people.

The solution

The patent combines a sound detector, a fan and a mister in one housing:

  1. A housing (6) has an air inlet (61) and an air outlet (62); some versions add guide vanes (63).
  2. On top sits a rotating mosquito-sound detector (1): a base (1300), a turning seat (130) with the detector circuit, a turning mechanism (13) with motors and gears that rotate it around and tilt it up and down, a concave sound-collecting dish (12) and a directional microphone (11) at its focus.
  3. Inside are a fan (2), a humidifier (3) - a mister next to the outlet - and a liquid tank (4) with the repellent liquid (41).
  4. A control circuit (5) receives the detector’s signal and runs the fan and humidifier.
  5. Infrared body sensors (7) on the housing tell the circuit when a person is near, so it can pause or change the spray.

Patent figure 2 - assembled unit: sound detector (1) on top of the housing (6), with the fan, mister and tank inside.

Who it is for

  • Outdoor-living and patio brands selling fans, heaters and mosquito products for decks and backyards.
  • Pest-control device companies looking for a demand-driven repeller that uses less refill liquid.
  • Smart-home and IoT brands that could add app alerts or mosquito activity logs to the detector.
  • Hospitality suppliers for outdoor restaurants, resorts and campsites.

How it works

The main parts

Mosquito Fan That Listens for Mosquitoes Before It Sprays - Patent drawing - exploded view
Patent figure 1 - exploded view: sound detector (1) with microphone (11), dish (12) and turning mechanism (13), fan (2), mister (3), tank (4) and housing (6).
No.PartWhat it does
1Sound detectorTurning, tilting head that listens for mosquitoes.
11Directional microphoneSits at the focus of the dish.
12Sound dishConcave reflector that gathers sound from one direction.
13Turning mechanismMotors, gears and a worm drive for rotation and tilt.
2FanMoves air from the inlet to the outlet.
3Humidifier / misterTurns the tank liquid into mist in the airflow.
4Liquid tankHolds the repellent liquid.
5Control circuitRuns the fan and mister from the detector and body-sensor signals.
6HousingInlet (61), outlet (62), optional guide vanes (63).
7Infrared body sensorDetects people near the unit.

A typical cycle

  1. Scan - the detector head turns and tilts, listening through the dish.
  2. Detect - the circuit recognizes mosquito wingbeat sound.
  3. Release - the fan and mister start and send the liquid out as a fine mist.
  4. Protect people - if the body sensor sees someone close, the spray is paused or changed.
  5. Rest - when no mosquitoes are heard, the fan and mister stop, saving liquid.
Mosquito Fan That Listens for Mosquitoes Before It Sprays - Patent drawing - detecting and spraying
Patent figure 10 - the unit detects mosquitoes (8) and sprays the liquid mist from the outlet.

Three body styles

The patent shows three versions: a slim tower (figures 1-3), a version with the detector beside the head (figures 4-6) and a tall cylinder with guide vanes around the outlet (figures 7-9).

Applications

Backyard decks and patios

A unit that sits quietly through the evening and only mists when mosquitoes arrive.

Outdoor restaurants and bars

Tables near gardens or water, where staff cannot keep refilling repellers.

Campsites and glamping

Covered areas and tent entrances, with a battery or solar version.

Garages, barns and porches

Semi-open spaces where mosquitoes come and go.

Vector-monitoring demonstrations

The sound detector alone can count mosquito activity for research or education projects.

Where it is less suitable

  • Bedrooms and closed rooms with people asleep - any spray device indoors must follow the liquid’s label; the body sensor does not replace label directions.
  • Large open fields - a single unit covers a limited area; it is designed for patios and rooms.

Frequently asked questions

How does it know mosquitoes are there?

A concave dish on top reflects sound onto a directional microphone, and the detector circuit listens for the hum of mosquito wings. Motors turn the dish around and tilt it, so it scans the surroundings.

What happens when it hears them?

The control circuit starts the fan and the humidifier. The humidifier turns liquid from the tank into a fine mist, and the fan carries it out through the outlet. When no mosquitoes are heard, it stops.

What liquid goes in the tank?

The patent calls it a medicinal liquid for killing or repelling mosquitoes. In the US the liquid must be an EPA-registered product (or a minimum-risk product) approved for this kind of use; we design the tank or refill cartridge around the liquid you choose.

Is it safe to use near people?

According to the patent, infrared body sensors detect people near the unit so the spray can be paused or changed. The liquid’s own label still decides where and how it can be used.

Does it work without the spray?

The fan works as a normal fan, and the detector can run on its own. Some buyers may want a version that only reports mosquito activity.

Can it be used outdoors?

The patent describes outdoor use against mosquitoes. An outdoor version needs a weatherproof housing and a battery or solar option, which we design in.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China, so it does not restrict the design in the US. It is in force in China until August 2028 at most, and making or selling it there needs the owner’s permission. Acoustic mosquito detection may be covered by other US patents - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
