Patent CN208930172U
Updated October 25, 2026Multi-Function Rock Hammer with Telescoping Handle, Built-In Light, Magnifier and Scale
A field geologist, rockhound or fossil hunter walks out with a rock hammer, a hand lens, a scale card for photos and a flashlight - and then hunts through pockets for each one. This hammer brings them together. A centimeter scale is bonded to the top of the head for size reference in photos. A ring on a hinge lets the hammer hang from a belt or pack. The handle telescopes: a spring-loaded pin snaps into one of four holes to set the length. A magnifying glass sits in the handle, and the grip end holds a battery flashlight with its own switch and screw-on cap.
- China utility model - lapsed
- No filings outside China
- Geology, rockhounding & field tools
- Forged steel head, tube handle, LED and battery

The problem
Field geology means carrying many small tools: a hammer to break and trim rock, a hand lens to read grain and minerals, a scale for photographs, and a light for shaded outcrops, caves and late returns. Each is easy to lose and slow to reach with gloves on. A fixed-length hammer is also a compromise - long for power, short for packing and close work.
The solution
- The hammer head (1) has a centimeter scale (2) bonded to its top front face.
- A hanging ring (3) is pivoted at the head through a hinge (9) running in an annular groove (8), so it folds out to hang the hammer.
- The head is joined to the handle (5) through a telescopic device (4): a telescopic rod (42) slides in a fixed rod (41). Inside the telescopic rod, a return spring (44) in a groove (43) pushes a round locking pin (45) out into one of four holes (46) in the fixed rod.
- A magnifying glass (6) is plugged into the top of the handle.
- A lighting device (7) in the handle end has a mounting bore (71) with a thread (72), a switch (73), a battery (74), a protective cap (75) and a lamp (76).

Who it is for
- Geology and field-equipment suppliers selling to university departments, survey companies and students who need a complete field hammer.
- Rockhounding and fossil-hunting brands looking for a hobby hammer with a clear story on the package.
- Outdoor and camping retailers wanting a multi-tool hammer for tent pegs, splitting kindling and trail use.
- Educational kit makers building earth-science field kits for schools and summer camps.
How it works
The main parts

| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hammer head | Strikes and trims rock. |
| 2 | Centimeter scale | Size reference on top of the head. |
| 3, 8, 9 | Hanging ring, groove, hinge | Fold-out ring for hanging. |
| 4 | Telescopic device | Sets the handle length. |
| 41, 42 | Fixed and telescopic rods | Slide inside each other. |
| 44, 45, 46 | Spring, pin, holes | Lock the length in one of four positions. |
| 5 | Handle | Grip and housing for lens and light. |
| 6 | Magnifying glass | Hand lens in the handle. |
| 7 | Lighting device | Flashlight in the grip end. |
In the field
- Set the length - press the pin, slide the handle to a hole and let the pin snap in: long for heavy blows, short for trimming and packing.
- Break and trim samples with the head.
- Inspect the fresh surface with the built-in magnifier.
- Photograph the sample next to the scale on the head.
- Light up a shaded outcrop or the walk back with the grip flashlight; unscrew the cap to change the battery.
- Hang it from a belt or pack by the fold-out ring.

Applications
University field courses
Students get one tool that covers hammer, lens, scale and light on mapping trips.
Rockhounding and fossil collecting
Hobby collectors split nodules, check crystals and photograph finds with a scale.
Survey and exploration crews
Geologists logging outcrops and core carry fewer separate tools.
Camping and outdoor use
A short, light hammer with a flashlight handles tent pegs and camp chores after dark.
School earth-science kits
A kit hammer that shows several field skills in one tool.
Where it is less suitable
- Heavy demolition or masonry - the telescoping joint is not meant for sledge-type work.
- Professional geologists wanting a solid one-piece hammer - some prefer forged single-piece hammers for maximum durability.
- Wet or underwater use - the flashlight would need a sealed, rated design.
Frequently asked questions
How does the handle extend?
The telescopic rod slides in the fixed rod. A spring pushes a round pin into one of four holes; press the pin, slide to the next hole and let it snap in.
Is the telescoping joint strong enough for hammering?
The joint carries every blow, so its pin and tube sizes are designed for the head weight and proven by impact testing on samples. Heavy demolition is not its job.
What powers the flashlight?
A battery in the grip end, behind a screw-on cap. The patent does not specify the cell; AAA alkaline or a rechargeable cell is chosen in design.
How strong is the magnifier?
The patent does not give a magnification. Lens power and size are chosen in design, typically similar to a field hand lens.
Can you make a chisel-tail version?
Yes. The patent’s head can be supplied with a pick tail for hard rock or a chisel tail for sedimentary rock and fossils.
Can the scale be in inches?
Yes. The patent uses centimeters; metric, inch or dual scales can be etched.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patent was filed only in China and has lapsed, so it does not restrict the design in the US or in China. Rock hammers and multi-tool hammers may be covered by other US patents - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
Are you affiliated with the patent owner?
No. IP2M is an independent design and manufacturing service working from the public patent document.
