Patent CN209176382U
Updated October 25, 2026Push-Button Retractable Pen with Guided Elastic Clip Mechanism
Standard click pens often suffer from wobbly clips and inconsistent locking because the push mechanism relies on loose tolerances or simple friction fits. This design replaces that approach with a dedicated mounting portion seated inside the barrel. The push-type pen clip features an elastic arm ending in a guiding projection. As you press the clip, the projection travels down a precisely shaped path formed by two locating guides, drops into a V-shaped card slot to hold the tip out, and releases via an unlock protrusion when pressed again. A spacer bar keeps the components aligned during the cycle. The patent describes it as designed to improve the service life and reliability of the pressing action, which is described as improving user experience.

The problem
In conventional retractable pens, the push button or clip often acts directly against a cam follower with minimal lateral support. Over thousands of clicks, this causes the clip to twist, wear unevenly, or fail to lock securely. According to the patent, existing mechanisms struggle with long-term reliability, leading to a degraded user experience where the pen either sticks in the extended position or fails to stay retracted.
The solution
- The pen body (10) is hollow and houses the refill (1), which is resiliently supported by a spring (2).
- A push-type pen clip (30) slides vertically. Its guide pad (31a) runs inside a guide groove (11) on the pen body to prevent detachment and guide up-and-down motion.
- The clip incorporates an elastic arm (32) tipped with a guiding projection (33).
- A mounting hole (12) in the pen body accepts a mounting portion (20). This insert contains the entire locking geometry: a first locating guide (21), a second locating guide (22), an unlock protrusion (23) and a spacer bar (24).
- When pressed, the guiding projection rides down the first guide surface (21a), deflects off the first convex slope (22a), and snaps into a V-shaped card slot (21c) to lock the refill outward.
- Pressing again pushes the projection past the unlock protrusion (23), allowing the spring to retract the refill while the projection travels up the third guide surface (21d).

Who it is for
- Stationery brands looking for a premium-feeling click pen with a highly durable internal mechanism that outlasts standard friction-fit designs.
- Promotional product companies that need a reliable pen for corporate giveaways where a broken click mechanism reflects poorly on the brand.
- Office supply wholesalers sourcing distinct mechanical designs to differentiate their private-label catalog from generic commodity pens.
- Educational suppliers providing robust writing tools for students who subject pens to heavy daily clicking and handling.
How it works
The main parts

| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Refill (pen core) | Holds the ink; moves up and down inside the barrel. |
| 2 | Spring | Sits below the refill to provide upward return force. |
| 10 | Pen body (handwriting) | Hollow barrel with a guide groove (11) and mounting hole (12). |
| 20 | Mounting portion | Insert fitted into the mounting hole; carries all guide tracks. |
| 21 | First locating guide | Features the first guide surface (21a), V-shaped card slot (21c) and third guide surface (21d). |
| 22 | Second locating guide | Provides the first convex slope (22a) and inclined surface (22b) to direct the projection. |
| 23 | Unlock protrusion | Sits inside the card slot; its second convex slope (23a) and unlock guide surface (23b) release the lock. |
| 24 | Spacer bar | Maintains spacing between the unlock protrusion and the inclined surface. |
| 30 | Push-type pen clip | Slides on the barrel; includes the pressing part (31), elastic arm (32) and guiding projection (33). |
| 33 | Guiding projection | The pin on the elastic arm that traces the paths on the mounting portion. |
| 40 | Swivel device | Optional assembly with swivel plates (41), connecting shaft (42) and gear (44) driven by the clip’s rack (34). |
Operating steps
- Press the clip - the user pushes down on the pressing part (31). The guide pad (31a) ensures straight vertical travel within the guide groove (11).
- Extend the refill - the elastic arm (32) flexes slightly as the guiding projection (33) enters the mounting portion (20). It slides down the first guide surface (21a) and hits the first convex slope (22a) of the second locating guide.
- Lock in place - the projection is deflected sideways by the convex slope and drops into the V-shaped card slot (21c). The refill is now held down against the spring (2), exposing the writing tip.
- Retract the refill - pressing the clip again forces the projection against the unlock protrusion (23). The second convex slope (23a) pushes the projection out of the V-slot.
- Return stroke - released from the slot, the spring pushes the refill back up. The guiding projection rides upward along the vertical third guide surface (21d) until the clip reaches its resting position.

Applications
Daily office writing
Employees click pens dozens of times a day during meetings or calls. The guided track prevents the clip from loosening over months of repetitive use, maintaining a crisp click feel compared to basic friction-cam pens.
Student environments
Students frequently fidget with pen mechanisms, applying uneven lateral pressure. The guide pad running in the barrel’s groove resists twisting, keeping the elastic arm aligned so the pen survives rough handling without jamming.
Corporate promotional merchandise
Brands imprint logos on pens given to clients. A mechanism that fails quickly damages the brand’s image. The dedicated mounting portion allows manufacturers to build a sturdier unit that reflects well on the company handing it out.
Drafting and technical sketching
Drafters switch rapidly between marking and moving rulers. A reliable lock ensures the tip stays fully extended without wobbling, while the quick unlock lets them retract the nib instantly to avoid snagging on paper edges.
Pens with interactive features
The optional swivel device uses rack teeth on the clip to spin a gear. This can rotate a decorative plate, reveal hidden information, or actuate a secondary tool built into the pen cap, adding value beyond simple writing.
Where it is less suitable
- Ultra-thin metal stylus pens - the mechanism requires space inside the barrel for the mounting portion and elastic arm, making it difficult to scale down to very slim diameters.
- Fountain pens or liquid ink rollers - these typically use caps rather than retractable springs to prevent the ink from drying out at the nib.
- Lowest-cost disposable pens - the multiple molded components (clip, mounting insert, specific barrel grooves) add tooling complexity compared to a single-piece plastic cam follower.
Frequently asked questions
How does the click mechanism differ from a standard pen?
Instead of a simple rotating cam, this pen uses an elastic arm on the clip with a guiding projection. That projection slides down a dedicated mounting insert inside the barrel, dropping into a V-shaped slot to lock the tip out, and hitting an unlock bump to release it. The patent describes it as designed to improve the service life and reliability of the pressing action.
What is the purpose of the mounting portion?
It is a separate insert that fits into a hole in the pen barrel. It holds all the complex geometry—the guide surfaces, the V-slot, the unlock protrusion and the spacer bar. This allows the barrel itself to remain a simpler tube while the locking logic is contained in a precision-molded component.
Does the clip rotate when I press it?
In the base design, the clip only slides up and down. However, the patent includes an optional swivel device. If manufactured with this feature, rack teeth on the sides of the clip engage small gears connected to swivel plates, causing those plates to rotate each time the clip is pressed.
Can I use standard ink refills?
The patent specifies a pen core and a spring but does not restrict the refill dimensions. In production, the internal cavity and spring seat can be sized to accept common international formats like the D1 standard ballpoint refill or standard gel cartridges.
Why is there a spacer bar inside the mount?
The spacer bar sits between the unlock protrusion and the inclined surface of the second locating guide. It maintains spacing between the unlock protrusion and the inclined surface.
What materials are best for the elastic arm?
The elastic arm must flex repeatedly without breaking. Plastics with high fatigue resistance, such as POM (acetal) or specific grades of PP or nylon, are typically selected during the engineering phase. Exact material specifications are confirmed on prototypes.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patent was filed only in China and its utility model status is Withdrawn - After Issue (actively abandoned on 2023-11-03), so it does not restrict the design in the US or in China. Retractable pen mechanisms may be covered by other US patents - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
