The problem

Magnetic window cleaners let you clean the outside of a window from inside, but they have three weak points:

• Rust - the neodymium magnets are usually only zinc-plated. Water gets in, the plating corrodes, and the magnet weakens year by year.

The solution

4. A button (5) with a latch (17) engages the magnet at the preset level. A jump-off spring (12) holds the magnet unit back otherwise, which the patent describes as an automatic anti-pinch function.

Setting the strength

The dial is a hollow ring with steps of different heights inside. Each step is a stop for the magnet unit: a lower stop lets the magnet come closer to the glass (stronger hold for thick glazing), a higher stop keeps it farther away (gentler hold for thin glass). The markings on the dial show which stop is selected.

1. Turn the dial to the setting that matches the glass.
2. Press the button (5): the latch (17) moves and the magnet unit drops to the selected stop, so the two halves hold through the glass.
3. Clean - guide the inside half; the outside half follows.
4. The dial only needs to be changed when you move to glass of a different thickness.

Sealed against rust

The magnet (23) and its plate (22) are enclosed by the carrier (14) and sealed box (15), with a gasket (16) between them. The whole sealed unit slides in its guide frame (25), so the strength can be changed without opening the seal.
