Fold-Out Desk Organizer Insert for School Backpacks

An insert that turns any school backpack into a classroom organizer. It sits inside the bag on the way to school; in class it lifts out by its handle, unfolds, and hangs on the edge of the desk or a wall with adjustable straps - workbooks, pens, a pencil case and a water bottle each in their own place. Its padded back doubles as a nap cushion.

The problem

Classroom desks are small. Workbooks, pencil cases, rulers and water bottles pile up on the desk or get stuffed back into the backpack, and children lose time - and homework - looking for things. Parents buy separate pencil cases, folders and desk organizers that rarely stay together.

The solution

The patent separates the school bag into an outer backpack (2) and an inner organizer (1):

  1. The organizer is built on a foldable base board (18) with a fold line (17) across the middle.
  2. Above the fold: a water-bottle pocket (10), a stationery pocket (16) and a pen hanger (11). Below the fold: two workbook pockets (6, 7). A removable pencil case (8) attaches with hook-and-loop (9).
  3. To carry it, the top and bottom end panels (12, 13) fold together and close with hook-and-loop (14, 15) - the organizer becomes a compact pack with a handle (5) that drops into the backpack.
  4. In class, it opens flat and hangs from adjustable straps (4, 19) on the desk edge or a wall.
  5. A sponge cushion (3) on the back pads the pack and can be used as a nap pillow.

Patent figure 2 - the organizer opened flat: bottle pocket (10), stationery pocket (16), pen hanger (11), pencil case (8), workbook pockets (6, 7), end panels (12, 13).

  • Amazon and retail sellers in the school-organization category, as an insert sold alone or bundled with a backpack.

Applications

Elementary and middle school classrooms

Workbooks, pencils and a bottle hang at the side of the desk instead of covering it. Children learn to keep each item in its place.

Homework at home

The same organizer hangs on a home desk or bedroom wall, so the homework kit moves between school and home in one piece.

Tutoring centers and after-school programs

Students arrive with everything organized and ready on the desk.

Art and music lessons

Pockets suit sketchbooks, colored pencils and sheet music.

Back-to-school retail

A “backpack organizer insert” is easy to explain on a product page and can be sold alone or bundled with a matching backpack.

Where it is less suitable

  • Older students with laptops - a padded laptop sleeve and tech organizer suits them better.
  • Desks without an edge or hook to hang from - the organizer then lies flat on the desk or in a desk drawer.

Frequently asked questions

Will it fit any backpack?

The patent sizes the organizer to fit most standard school backpacks. We set the final size around the backpacks you sell or the workbook size in your market.

Does it need a hook on the desk?

The adjustable straps can loop around a chair back, a desk-side hook or a wall hook. Clip-on desk hooks can be added to the package.

How heavy is it when full?

That depends on the books. The base board and fabric add little weight; we choose light board inserts.

Can it be washed?

Fabric parts can be spot-cleaned; a removable cushion cover can be made machine-washable.

Is it safe for young children?

Children’s school bags must meet US children’s product rules, including lead and phthalate limits and third-party testing - we plan these in from the start.

Can we put our own prints on it?

Yes - brand colors, character prints and name labels are all possible.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and lapsed in 2025, so it does not restrict anyone. Other organizer designs may be patented - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.

Are you affiliated with the patent owner?

No. IP2M is an independent design and manufacturing service working from the public patent document.
