Snap-Together Luggage Connector

Two suitcases, one traveler, two hands full. This design builds a stud-and-socket snap into the cases themselves: press one case against the other and the stud clicks into a U-shaped spring ring, holding the two together so you can pull both with one hand. To separate them, just lift one case up. Optional magnets help the parts find each other.

🧳

Two cases, one hand

Join two (or more) suitcases side by side and pull them together with one handle.

🔘

Press to lock

A grooved stud on one case snaps into a socket with a U-shaped spring ring on the other.

⬆️

Lift to release

Lift the case with the stud and the snap lets go - no straps, no buckles to thread.

🧲

Optional magnets

Magnets in both parts pull them into place and add holding force.

The problem

Most trips need one suitcase - until they need two. Then the traveler has a suitcase in each hand, no hand free for a phone, passport, coffee or child, and two cases that drift apart on every turn. Loose straps and add-on clips exist, but they get lost and take time to fit.

The solution

The patent builds a press-stud connector into the luggage itself:

  1. The first case (1) has a stud assembly (2) fixed on its side.
  2. The second case (4) has a matching socket assembly (3).
  3. Press the cases together: the guide post of the stud enters the socket, and a U-shaped spring ring (32) inside the socket opens and snaps into a ring groove around the post.
  4. The two cases are now locked side by side and can be pulled with one hand.
  5. To separate them, lift the case with the stud upward and it releases.

The patent notes the same connector can be used between a suitcase and other bags, and that more than two cases can be joined.

Snap-Together Luggage Connector - Patent drawing - two suitcases joined
Patent figure 1 - first case (1) with the stud (2), second case (4) with the socket (3), joined side by side.

Who it is for

  • Luggage brands looking for a simple, visible “system” feature across a range of case sizes.
  • Private-label and Amazon luggage sellers who want a two-piece set that connects.
  • Bag and accessory brands - matching carry-ons, duffels or backpacks that attach to a suitcase.

How it works

The main parts

Snap-Together Luggage Connector - Patent drawing - stud on the first case
Patent figure 2 - the stud assemblies (2) on the back panel of the first case (1).
Snap-Together Luggage Connector - Patent drawing - socket on the second case
Patent figure 3 - the socket assemblies (3) on the second case (4).
No.PartWhat it does
1First caseCarries the stud assembly.
2Stud assemblyThe male half of the snap.
21Stud baseFixed to the case.
23Guide postPost on the base, molded in one piece with it.
22Ring grooveGroove around the guide post that the spring ring catches.
4Second caseCarries the socket assembly.
3Socket assemblyThe female half of the snap.
31Socket baseFixed to the case.
35Socket housingHolds the ring; molded in one piece with the base.
34Socket slotOpening the guide post enters.
32U-shaped spring ringIts two ends cross the slot; it spreads open as the post enters and snaps into the groove.
33Closed bottom faceKeeps the ring from falling out.
5MagnetOptional, in both halves; pulls them together.
6Ring flange / grooveUsed to sew or fix the part into the case panel.
7Connecting rodInside the flange groove, for fixing to the case.

Connecting two cases

Snap-Together Luggage Connector - Patent drawing - stud assembly
Patent figure 4 - stud assembly: base (21), guide post (23) and its ring groove (22), mounting flange (6) and rod (7).
  1. Stand the cases side by side, stud facing socket.
  2. Press them together. The guide post (23) pushes into the socket slot (34); the U-shaped ring (32) spreads open.
  3. Click - the ring springs back into the groove (22) on the post and holds it. Magnets (5), if fitted, add holding force.
  4. Pull both cases with the handle of either one.

Separating them

Snap-Together Luggage Connector - Patent drawing - socket assembly
Patent figure 5 - socket assembly: base (31), spring ring (32), closed bottom face (33), slot (34) and housing (35).
  1. Lift the case with the stud straight up.
  2. The post slides out of the slot, past the ring, and the cases are apart.

Applications

Family and long trips

Two checked cases - or a checked case and a carry-on - moved through the airport by one person.

Business travel

A carry-on and a garment or laptop case that travel as one unit.

Matching luggage sets

A two- or three-piece set sold as a “connecting” system - each case can still be used alone.

Suitcase plus bag

The patent mentions attaching other bags: a duffel, cooler bag or backpack with a socket that clicks onto a suitcase.

Crew and team travel

Sports teams, film crews and tour groups moving many cases at once.

Where it is less suitable

  • Very heavy, fully packed checked cases - the load on the connector and on the case shell needs testing; heavy pairs may need two connectors per side.
  • Existing luggage - the parts are built into the case panel, so this is for new production, not an after-market clip.

Frequently asked questions

How do the two suitcases connect?

A grooved stud on one case is pressed into a socket on the other. A U-shaped spring ring in the socket opens, then snaps into the groove and holds the stud.

How do I separate them?

Lift the case that carries the stud straight up. The stud slides out of the socket.

Will the cases come apart while rolling?

The connector is designed to hold during normal rolling; holding force is set by the ring and groove design and can be increased with magnets or a second connector. It is tested on full cases during prototyping.

Can I still use each case on its own?

Yes. The stud and socket are small, flush parts on the case panel; each case works normally when it is not connected.

Can more than two cases be connected?

Yes, the patent mentions joining two or more cases - a case can carry a socket on one side and a stud on the other.

Does it work on soft-side bags?

Yes. The parts have a flange for sewing or fixing into the panel, so soft bags, duffels and backpacks can carry them too.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and has lapsed, so it does not restrict anyone. Other connectable-luggage designs may be patented - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
