Quick-Access Luggage with Fold-Down Back Compartment

A small compartment is molded into the back of the suitcase, right between the trolley handle rails. Flip its lid down and your phone, passport, wallet or power bank is right there - no unzipping, no kneeling on the airport floor. A built-in USB passthrough lets you charge on the go.

🛫

Grab it in seconds

Phone, boarding pass, passport or wallet sit in a pocket you can open while the case is standing upright.

🔋

Charge on the move

A USB cable runs from the compartment to a port on the case, so a power bank inside can charge your phone.

🔒

Lid that locks

The compartment lid hinges at the bottom and has its own lock, so small valuables stay put.

🧳

Compact by design

The compartment sits between the trolley rails and takes only a small part of the case's interior.

The problem

Every traveler knows the moment: you are in the security line or at the gate, and the item you need - a passport, a charger, headphones - is inside the suitcase. Opening a hard-shell case means laying it flat and unzipping it in public.

Soft-sided luggage has outside pockets, but hard-shell cases usually have none. Travelers end up juggling extra pouches, a separate backpack, or stuffing items in their jacket.

The solution

This design builds a small, rigid storage compartment into the back panel of a hard-shell trolley case:

  • The compartment is a molded box (base) set into an opening in the shell, right between the two telescoping handle rails.
  • A cover hinged at the bottom flips down to open and snaps back up to close; a lock holds it shut.
  • Inside, a mesh pouch keeps small items in place, and two small stoppers on the lid form a slot for a phone or cards.
  • A USB cable runs from the compartment to a USB port in the case’s zipper-lock area, so a power bank stored in the compartment can charge a phone plugged in outside.
Quick-Access Luggage with Fold-Down Back Compartment - Patent Fig. 2 - suitcase with the back compartment open, showing mesh pouch and fold-down lid
Patent figure 2 - the compartment open: fold-down lid (1), storage cavity (11) with mesh pouch (16), hinge (15) and USB cable (4).

Who it is for

  • Luggage brands and Amazon sellers who want a visible, easy-to-explain feature that sets their hard-shell line apart.
  • Business-travel and carry-on collections, where quick access to a laptop charger, passport and phone is a real selling point.
  • Corporate gifting and promotional luggage - the lid is a natural place for a printed logo.

The feature adds only a molded insert, a hinged lid, a small lock and a mesh pouch to a standard trolley case - an easy upgrade for any luggage factory.

How it works

The main parts

Quick-Access Luggage with Fold-Down Back Compartment - Patent Fig. 1 - suitcase back with the compartment closed
Patent figure 1 - compartment closed: lid (1) set into the back shell (2), between the trolley handle (9) rails.
No.PartWhat it does
1Lid (cover)Closes the compartment flush with the back of the suitcase; flips down to open.
2Suitcase shellStandard hard-shell body with an opening cut into the back panel.
3Compartment baseA molded box set into the shell opening; it forms the storage cavity (11).
4USB cableRuns from inside the compartment to the case’s USB port.
5USB portExternal USB connector built into the zipper-lock housing.
6Lower hinge seatLets the lid swing down and back up.
7Lid lockLocks the lid to the base when closed.
8Zipper lockThe suitcase’s main lock (TSA-style lock on the lower half).
9Trolley handleTelescoping pull handle; the compartment sits between its rails.
10FeetPads on the case that protect it when lying flat.
11 / 12Storage cavity / openingThe space inside the base and its front opening.
13, 14, 15Lid stoppers and slotTwo raised stops on the lid’s inner face form a slot that holds a phone or cards.
16Mesh pouchStretchy net inside the cavity that holds small items in place.

Using it

  1. Unlock and flip down. Release the lid lock (7) and the lid (1) swings down on its lower hinge (6), staying attached to the case.
  2. Grab or stow. Reach into the cavity (11): small items sit in the mesh pouch (16); a phone or boarding pass can sit in the slot on the lid.
  3. Charge. A power bank stored in the compartment connects to the USB cable (4), which leads to the external USB port (5) - plug your phone in there.
  4. Close and lock. Push the lid back up until it locks. The case can be packed and rolled as usual.

Design notes

  • Shape: the patent allows a round, oval or polygonal compartment; rectangular fits phones and passports best.
  • Placement: between the trolley rails, where the case back is already reinforced for the handle. The compartment takes a small part of the interior; its depth is a trade-off to set during design.
  • Strength: the base is a separate molded part, so the shell keeps its strength around the opening.

Applications

Airport and air travel

At check-in, security and the gate, travelers repeatedly need the same few things: passport, boarding pass, phone, headphones. A compartment that opens while the suitcase stands upright keeps them one flip away.

Business travel and carry-ons

For a carry-on that goes from taxi to airport to hotel to meeting, quick access to a phone charger, power bank, cables and business cards is a strong selling point - and the USB port lets travelers top up their phone while waiting.

Family travel

Parents can keep tickets, snacks, wipes or a small toy in the compartment instead of digging through bags with children in tow.

Branded and promotional luggage

The flat lid on the back is a clean spot for a logo, a nameplate or a luggage-ID window - useful for corporate gifts, hotel and airline partner programs, or school and sports team luggage.

A feature for a whole luggage line

The compartment is a separate molded part, so the same idea can be used on:

  • carry-on (20"), medium (24") and large (28") hard-shell cases;
  • aluminum-frame cases;
  • kids’ ride-on and themed suitcases.

Where it is less suitable

  • Ultra-light luggage where every gram counts - the base, lid and lock add some weight.
  • Soft-sided luggage, which can simply use fabric front pockets instead.

Frequently asked questions

What fits in the compartment?

That depends on the size you choose. A typical design fits a phone, passport, boarding pass, wallet, earbuds and a slim power bank. Larger versions can fit a tablet or a laptop charger.

Can I open it while the case is standing?

Yes. The lid hinges at the bottom and flips down, so you do not need to lay the suitcase flat or open the main zipper.

Is it secure?

The lid has its own lock. For valuables, the lock can be a key or combination type, and the interior can use RFID-blocking lining for cards and passports.

Does the suitcase include a battery?

No. The USB port is a passthrough: you place your own power bank in the compartment. Airlines require lithium power banks to travel in the cabin, so the bag is sold without a built-in battery.

Does the compartment reduce packing space?

A little. It sits between the handle rails and takes a small part of the interior; the exact depth is chosen during design to balance pocket size and packing space.

Can it be added to soft-sided luggage?

The design is meant for hard-shell cases, where outside pockets are usually missing. Soft luggage can use fabric pockets instead.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and lapsed in 2024, so it does not restrict anyone. Other companies’ luggage patents may still apply to specific features - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.

Are you affiliated with the patent owner?

No. IP2M is an independent design and manufacturing service working from the public patent document.
