Lift-Up Storage Bed with Four-Bar Linkage That Slides the Deck Away from the Headboard

Ottoman and lift-up storage beds give a full bed's worth of storage space, but many lift mechanisms swing the deck straight up around a hinge near the headboard, so the mattress rubs the headboard or wall and the user has to pull hard at the start. This design replaces the simple hinge with a four-bar linkage on each side. Pulling the handle at the head end first raises the deck a little, then the linkage carries it up and away from the headboard. A slotted link and a stop pin hold the open position, gas springs carry the weight, and a vertical hook rod can prop the foot end.

↗️

Lifts up and away

The deck moves away from the headboard while it rises, so the mattress does not scrape the headboard or wall.

🔩

Four-bar linkage

Four hinged links per side with fixed length ratios control the path and stop over-travel.

🛑

Holds itself open

A slot and stop pin end the stroke, and opposing link angles keep the open deck balanced.

🪝

Prop rod at the foot

A vertical hook rod between frame and deck adds support while the storage space is loaded.

The problem

A lift-up bed is one of the cheapest ways to add a closet’s worth of storage to a small bedroom, which is why “ottoman” and “hydraulic storage” beds sell well online. The weak point is the lifting hardware. A deck that simply pivots near the headboard swings its mattress edge into the headboard and the wall, wears the upholstery, and needs a hard pull at the start of the lift before the gas springs take over. Some mechanisms also tend to swing past their intended open angle, or drop back unless the user holds them.

The solution

The patent puts a lifting assembly (4) on each long side of the bed frame instead of a plain hinge:

  1. A first link (41) is bolted along the side of the bed board (3), so it moves with the deck.
  2. A short second link (42), a long third link (43) and a fourth link (46) are hinged in sequence; the far end of the fourth link is hinged back onto the first link, closing the loop.
  3. The third and fourth links share a pivot on a mounting bracket (22) that is bolted to the inside of the bed frame (2).
  4. The third link is longer than the fourth, and the second link is the shortest of all. When the deck is fully raised, the fourth link stands vertical and leans away from the headboard (1) while the third link leans the opposite way, so the deck is held in balance.
  5. A gas spring (25) between the bracket and the second link helps lift the deck and keeps it from falling.
  6. A waist-shaped slot (44) in the third link rides on a stop post (23) on the bracket to end the stroke; a support seat (24) carries the link when the bed is closed.

Patent figure 1 - the bed with its deck (3) lifted on the side linkages, headboard (1) on the left.

Who it is for

  • Bedroom furniture brands adding a storage bed with a smoother lift and less headboard wear than basic pivot designs.
  • Bed-lift hardware suppliers who sell gas-spring lift kits to furniture factories and want a linkage that controls the path, not only the force.
  • Online mattress and platform-bed sellers looking for a storage model that ships flat and assembles with bolted brackets.
  • Small-space and student-housing furnishers who need under-bed storage that one person can open safely.

How it works

The main parts

Lift-Up Storage Bed with Four-Bar Linkage That Slides the Deck Away from the Headboard - Patent drawing - lifting assembly
Patent figure 2 - the lifting assembly on one side: links 41, 42, 43 and 46, gas spring (25) and mounting bracket (22).
No.PartWhat it does
1HeadboardFixed to the frame at the head end.
2Bed frameBox frame with corner fittings (21) that also support the closed deck.
3Bed boardThe mattress deck; has a lift handle (31) near the headboard.
41First linkFixed to the side of the deck.
42Second linkShortest link; the gas spring acts on it.
43Third linkLongest link; pivots on the bracket and has the slot (44).
45Cross barJoins the two third links so both sides move together.
46Fourth linkShares the bracket pivot with link 43 and ties back to link 41.
22Mounting bracketBolted to the frame; carries the pivots, stop post (23), support seat (24) and stiffening ribs (26).
25Gas springAssists the lift and holds the deck up.
5, 51, 52Hook seat, hook base and hook rodVertical prop between frame and deck at the foot end.

Using it

  1. Pull the handle (31) at the head end upward and away from the headboard.
  2. The first link drags the second link toward it, so the deck rises a little before it moves sideways.
  3. As the second link rises it pulls the third link off its support seat; the third link turns about the bracket pivot and the deck lifts while sliding toward the foot end.
  4. At full travel the stop post reaches the end of the slot and the opposing link angles hold the deck open; the gas springs carry the weight.
  5. For loading, hook the prop rod (52) between the frame and the deck. To close, unhook it and push the deck down - the short fourth link stops the third link from over-rotating, so the deck returns cleanly.

Patent figure 3 - detail A: the waist-shaped slot (44) in the third link riding on the stop post (23).

Applications

Small bedrooms and city apartments

Where there is no room for a dresser, the whole footprint under the mattress becomes storage for seasonal clothes, bedding and luggage. Because the deck clears the headboard, the bed can sit tight against a wall.

Upholstered beds with tall headboards

Fabric and leather headboards are the first thing a pivoting deck damages. A linkage that moves the mattress away from the headboard protects the upholstery and the mattress cover.

Guest rooms and holiday rentals

Hosts store spare linens and cleaning supplies under the guest bed. A lift that stays open by itself lets housekeeping work with both hands.

Student and staff housing

Single and three-quarter beds with lift-up storage reduce the need for separate cabinets in shared rooms; the bolted brackets suit flat-pack delivery.

Retrofit lift kits

The linkage, bracket and gas spring can be sold as a hardware kit for furniture makers who build their own frames.

Where it is less suitable

  • Very low-profile beds - the linkage and bracket need some depth inside the frame; slim platform beds may not have room.
  • Side-opening designs - this mechanism lifts the deck from the head end; beds that should open from the side need a different layout.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a standard gas-lift storage bed?

A standard kit pivots the deck around a hinge near the headboard. Here each side has a four-bar linkage, so the deck first rises and then travels away from the headboard as it opens. The mattress does not drag along the headboard or the wall.

Does the deck stay open on its own?

Yes. The patent ends the stroke with a slot and stop post, and at full travel the third and fourth links lean in opposite directions so the deck is balanced. Gas springs carry the weight, and a hook rod at the foot end can add support while you load the storage space.

How heavy a mattress can it lift?

The patent gives no figures. Gas-spring force and link sizes are chosen in design for each bed size and the mattress weight you plan to sell with it, and the lift effort is checked on prototypes.

Which bed sizes can be made?

Any standard size. The linkage geometry is scaled per size; larger beds may use stronger springs or a second spring per side.

Can the bed ship flat?

Yes. The mounting brackets are bolted to the frame in the patent, so the frame, deck and lift hardware can be packed separately and assembled at home.

Do both sides move together?

A connecting bar between the two third links ties the left and right linkages together, so the deck lifts evenly even when it is pulled from one corner.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and has lapsed, so it does not restrict the design in the US or in China. Bed-lift mechanisms may be covered by other US patents - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
