Portable Rotatable Hair Dryer with Battery and Folding Handle

Standard folding hair dryers hinge at a single pivot point, leaving a bulky joint that catches on bag linings and takes up more room than necessary. This design replaces the hinge with two matching inclined surfaces—one on the end face of the air-blowing barrel, one on the end face of the handle—joined by a convex ring that turns inside a rotating hole. Because the inclination angles are identical, turning the barrel aligns it perfectly with the handle so the whole unit forms a single straight line. When turned back, the two inclined faces seat against each other to form the usual right-angle working shape. A built-in battery removes the power cord entirely, making the straight-folded profile easy to slide into a backpack or carry-on.

The problem

Travel hair dryers usually fold at a simple hinge. That hinge creates a thick joint that does not lie flat, so the folded unit still bulges inside a suitcase or gym bag. Corded models add another tangle to pack, and many folding mechanisms loosen over time, letting the barrel wobble during use. Buyers who travel frequently or work out daily need a dryer that packs as small as possible without giving up airflow or heat.

The solution

This design solves the packing problem by replacing the hinge with two identical inclined planes. One plane is molded onto the end face of the air-blowing barrel, and the matching plane sits on the end face of the handle. A convex ring on one face fits into a rotating hole on the other, allowing the barrel to turn around the axis of the incline. Because the angles match, rotating the barrel swings it from a right-angle working position into full alignment with the handle, forming a single straight line. A locking block inside the handle clicks into one of two grooves on the convex ring to hold the barrel firmly in either shape. Power comes from a battery housed in the handle, removing the cord completely.

Who it is for

  • Consumer electronics brands expanding their personal-care lines with a compact, cordless dryer for retail and e-commerce channels.
  • Amazon sellers and private-label importers looking for a differentiated travel appliance that photographs well in its straight-folded form.
  • Hotel and hospitality procurement teams sourcing cordless dryers for guest rooms where wall outlets are limited or cords present a tripping concern.
  • Promotional product distributors supplying branded travel accessories to corporate clients, gyms or airlines.

How it works

The main parts

Portable Rotatable Hair Dryer with Battery and Folding Handle - Patent drawing - exploded view
Patent figure 2 - internal components of the handle and barrel.
No.PartWhat it does
1Air-blowing barrelDirects heated air; carries the first inclined surface (11).
2HandleHouses the motor, battery and circuit board; carries the second inclined surface (24).
3Rotating structureConvex ring (31) and rotating hole (32) that join the two inclined surfaces.
4Locking structureLocking block (41) and locking grooves (42, 43) that fix the barrel angle.
5Second outer shellOuter housing of the handle.
6Inner shellFirst inner shell (61) and second inner shell (62) buckled together inside the handle.
9Heating frameMultiple heating sheets (91) inside the barrel.
26MotorDrives the fan to push air through the barrel.
27BatterySupplies power to the motor and heating frame.
28Circuit boardConnects the battery, motor and heating frame electrically.

Operating steps

  1. Unfold the barrel - pull the air-blowing barrel away from the straight position; the first arc guide surface (411) on the locking block pushes the block out of the second locking groove (43), allowing the convex ring (31) to turn inside the rotating hole (32).
  2. Lock in working position - continue rotating until the barrel reaches the right angle; the locking block snaps into the first locking groove (42), holding the bent shape. A limiting block (312) on the convex ring meets a resisting block (25) inside the handle to prevent over-rotation.
  3. Turn on - press the switch to run the motor (26) and energize the heating sheets (91) via the circuit board (28) and battery (27). Air passes over the heating frame (9) and exits the barrel.
  4. Fold for storage - after cooling, push the barrel back toward the handle; the second arc guide surface (412) releases the locking block from the first groove, the barrel rotates along the inclined planes until it aligns with the handle, and the block clicks into the second locking groove (43).

Applications

Business travel

Frequent flyers need a dryer that fits in a laptop bag alongside chargers and documents. The straight-folded shape slides into narrow compartments, and the built-in battery means no searching for a bathroom outlet near the mirror.

Gym and fitness bags

After a workout, users want to dry hair quickly before leaving the locker room. A cordless, compact dryer avoids tangling with shoes and water bottles in a duffel bag, and the locking mechanism keeps it rigid during use even when handled quickly.

Hotel guest rooms

Boutique hotels and serviced apartments can place a cordless dryer in the room drawer instead of mounting a corded unit on the wall. The linear profile stores neatly, and guests cannot trip over a cord stretched across the bathroom floor.

Camping and outdoor trips

Campers using battery-powered setups appreciate appliances that do not rely on grid electricity. The dryer runs off its internal battery, and the straight shape packs efficiently into a hiking backpack alongside other cylindrical gear.

Dorm rooms and shared spaces

Students in dormitories often share limited outlets. A battery-operated dryer frees the socket for laptops or phones, and the small folded footprint leaves more desk space available.

Where it is less suitable

  • Professional salon styling - salons require continuous high-wattage airflow that exceeds typical battery capacity, so corded professional dryers remain the standard.
  • Wall-mounted public restrooms - fixed, hardwired hand or hair dryers are preferred in high-traffic public washrooms to prevent loss or theft.
  • Heavy-duty industrial drying - this appliance is designed for personal hair care, not for drying materials or equipment.

Frequently asked questions

How does the barrel fold into a straight line?

The end face of the air-blowing barrel and the end face of the handle each have an inclined surface cut at the same angle. A convex ring on one surface fits into a rotating hole on the other. Turning the barrel along these matched angles swings it from the right-angle working position until it aligns perfectly with the handle, forming one straight line.

Is there a cord?

No. The patent describes a battery housed inside the handle that powers the motor, the circuit board and the heating frame. There is no external power cord during use.

Does the barrel stay locked while drying hair?

Yes. A locking block inside the handle engages one of two grooves on the convex ring. One groove holds the barrel in the bent working position, and the other holds it in the straight storage position. Arc guide surfaces on the block allow it to release when you intentionally rotate the barrel.

Can the barrel over-rotate past the working angle?

A limiting block on the convex ring meets a resisting block inside the handle to stop further rotation once the correct working angle is reached.

What heats the air?

A heating frame inside the barrel consists of multiple heating sheets. Each sheet has convex parts that insert into matching grooves on the inner wall of the barrel to hold them in place.

What are the dimensions and battery capacity?

Specific sizes and capacities are not stated in the patent. They are set in design and confirmed on prototypes based on the target airflow and run time.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and has no US counterpart, so it does not restrict manufacturing or sales in the United States. However, it remains in force in China until at most 2029-11-08 (if annual fees are paid), meaning production there requires the owner’s permission. Other companies hold later US patents in the hair-dryer field that cite this document, so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production. See Patent & Production.

Are you affiliated with the patent owner?

No. IP2M is an independent design and manufacturing service working from the public patent document.
