Car Headrest Pillow with Ratchet Side Wings and Push-Button Reach

Clip-on car neck pillows are either soft cushions that slide around or fixed shells that never quite meet the back of your head. This pillow is adjustable. A bracket clamps to the two headrest posts; a telescopic arm with a push button sets how far forward the pillow sits. The pillow has a firm middle section and two side wings, joined by spring-loaded ratchets, so each wing clicks forward to cradle the head for a nap and folds back for driving. Foam padding covers the frame front and back.

The problem

Passengers sleep in cars, and their heads fall sideways. Clip-on neck pillows and U-shaped travel pillows help a little, but a soft cushion slides around and a fixed headrest shell cannot match every head and seat. Many car headrests are also angled so the head does not touch them at all. The patent’s answer is a firm, adjustable pillow that mounts on the headrest itself.

The solution

The patent adds three adjustments to a headrest pillow:

  1. The pillow frame has a middle bracket (3) and two side brackets (2), covered by front foam (1) and rear foam (5).
  2. Each side bracket is joined to the middle by a pivot (4) with a ratchet - two toothed end caps (8, 9) pushed together by a spring (7). Push a wing and the teeth slip one notch; let go and it holds. Variants use a bump in a row of grooves, or let the wings slide instead of pivot.
  3. A mounting bracket (10) clamps to the headrest posts. Its adjuster (101) holds a telescopic arm (102); pressing the button (104) frees the arm to move the pillow forward or back, and a spring locks it when released.
  4. A connector (6) on the pillow frame has several positions (61) at different heights, and one of the post clamps (105) is movable to fit different post spacings.
Car Headrest Pillow with Ratchet Side Wings and Push-Button Reach - Patent drawing - pillow on its bracket
Patent figure 1 - front foam (1), rear foam (5), connector (6) with height positions (61), telescopic arm (102), button (104), movable clamp (105) and mounting bracket (10).

Who it is for

  • Car-accessory brands wanting a headrest pillow with real mechanical adjustment.
  • Travel-comfort brands extending neck pillows into the car.
  • Ride-hailing and fleet suppliers - comfort upgrades for passenger seats.
  • Automotive retail and e-commerce sellers looking for a product that is easy to show in a video.

How it works

The main parts

Car Headrest Pillow with Ratchet Side Wings and Push-Button Reach - Patent drawing - exploded pillow
Patent figure 3 - exploded pillow: front foam (1), side brackets (2), middle bracket (3), pivot (4), rear foam (5), connector (6), spring (7) and ratchet caps (8, 9, 81).
No.PartWhat it does
1, 5Front and rear foamPadding over the frame.
2Side brackets (wings)Pivot or slide forward to support the side of the head.
3Middle bracketFirm center behind the head.
4PivotJoins each wing to the middle bracket.
7, 8, 9Spring and ratchet capsHold each wing at the chosen angle (teeth 81, 82; or bump 84 in grooves 83).
6, 61ConnectorJoins the frame to the arm at one of several heights.

105, 106Post clampsGrip the headrest posts; one moves to fit the spacing.

Adjusting the reach

Car Headrest Pillow with Ratchet Side Wings and Push-Button Reach - Patent drawing - exploded bracket
Patent figure 8 - exploded mounting bracket: adjuster covers (1011, 1012), telescopic arm (102) with holes (1021), locking piece (103), button (104), movable clamp (105) and clamp (106).
  1. Clamp the bracket to the headrest posts.
  2. Press the button (104) - the locking piece leaves the arm’s holes.
  3. Slide the pillow forward until it meets the back of the head.
  4. Release - the spring pushes the locking piece back into a hole.

Setting the wings

Car Headrest Pillow with Ratchet Side Wings and Push-Button Reach - Patent drawing - ratchet section
Patent figure 5 - section between middle bracket (3) and side bracket (2): ratchet teeth (81, 82) held together by the spring (7).
  1. Push a wing forward - the ratchet clicks notch by notch.
  2. Stop where it supports the side of the head.
  3. Push it back flat for driving or when the seat is empty.

Applications

Passenger naps on road trips

Side support that stops the head falling sideways while sleeping.

Ride-hailing, taxi and chauffeur cars

A comfort upgrade passengers notice, adjustable for each rider.

Long-haul truck cabs and RVs

For co-drivers and passengers resting on the move.

Older adults and taller passengers

Reach and height adjustment for heads that do not meet the factory headrest.

Office and gaming chairs with headrest posts

The same post clamp fits some chairs with post-mounted headrests.

Where it is less suitable

  • Seats with integrated headrests - the bracket needs headrest posts to clamp to.
  • Driver’s seat in use - drivers should use the pillow flat for comfort only; it must never block the view or move the head into an unsafe position.

Frequently asked questions

How does it attach to the car?

The bracket clamps to the two headrest posts. According to the patent, one clamp can move so the bracket fits different post spacings.

How are the side wings adjusted?

Each wing is joined to the middle by a spring-loaded ratchet. Push it forward or back and it clicks to a new position and stays there. The patent also describes sliding-wing versions.

Can the pillow move closer to my head?

Yes. Press the button on the bracket and slide the telescopic arm forward or back; release it and a spring-loaded lock holds the position. Height is set by choosing one of several connection points on the pillow frame.

Does it fit every car?

It needs a headrest with posts. Seats with integrated, post-less headrests cannot take the bracket. We test fit on the vehicles you target.

Is it safe to use in the driver’s seat?

We recommend labeling it for passengers, or for drivers only with the wings flat. It must not change the head restraint’s protective position or block side airbags.

What materials are used?

The patent describes front and rear foam over a frame. Memory foam with a removable, washable cover is a typical choice.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China, so it does not restrict the design in the US. It is in force in China until December 2029 at most, and making or selling it there needs the owner’s permission. Car headrest pillows may be covered by other patents - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.

Are you affiliated with the patent owner?

No. IP2M is an independent design and manufacturing service working from the public patent document.
