Rigid Shell Container with Removable Silicone Liner

A two-layer container in which only the inner layer touches the food or drink. The rigid outer shell - which can be transparent - gives shape and grip; a soft silicone liner holds the contents, seals against the lid and lifts out for washing. An air gap between the layers, liners in different shapes, and logos or patterns molded through the base let one shell become many products: cups, lunch boxes and collapsible versions.

  • China utility model - lapsed
  • No filings outside China
  • Food & drink containers
  • Molded shell plus silicone liner

🧴

Removable silicone liner

Only the soft liner touches the contents - it lifts out of the shell for washing.

🔍

Clear outer shell

The rigid shell can be transparent, showing a liner of a different shape or color inside.

🌬️

Air gap between layers

Shell and liner are separated by a gap over at least part of the wall.

🔤

Logo lock in the base

Studs on the liner bottom pass through holes in the shell base - the holes can be letters or patterns.

The problem

Cups and food containers are usually one material: plastic that scratches and stains, glass that breaks, or silicone that is floppy. Cleaning corners and lids is hard, and every new shape or color means a whole new product. The patent separates the two jobs - structure and contact with the contents - into two layers.

The solution

The container is built from:

  1. A rigid outer shell (101) with a bottom and side wall. It can be at least partly transparent.
  2. A flexible liner (102), for example silicone rubber, that sits inside the shell and holds liquid without leaking.
  3. The top of the liner is detachably connected to the shell: a flange on the liner rests on an inward mounting ledge in the shell, with a bent edge in a groove.
  4. Between shell wall and liner wall there is a gap over at least part of the height; the liner’s outer shape can be different from the shell’s inner shape (for example, wavy).
  5. The liner’s bottom rests on the shell’s bottom, and studs on the liner snap through holes in the shell base. The studs and holes can be letters or patterns.
  6. A press ring (103) or a lid clamps the liner top and seals it.

Patent figure 2 - exploded cup: outer shell (101), silicone liner (102) and press ring (103).

Who it is for

  • Drinkware and food-storage brands looking for a modular, easy-clean range.
  • Baby and kids’ tableware brands - soft silicone contact surfaces with a sturdy shell.
  • Promotional and gift suppliers - logos molded through the base.
  • Packaging buyers looking for reusable containers with replaceable liners.

How it works

The main parts

Versions in the patent

Rigid Shell Container with Removable Silicone Liner - Patent drawing - lunch box
Patent figure 8 - a food box: outer shell (601), divided silicone liner (702) and clip-on lid (658).
  • Cups with straight or wavy liners (figures 1-6).
  • Food boxes with divided liners and clip-on lids (figures 7-12, 22-24).
  • Collapsible cups and boxes whose shell sections telescope down (figures 13-21).

Using it

  1. Fill the liner - only the silicone touches the food or drink.
  2. Close with the press ring or lid, which seals against the liner top.
  3. To clean, remove the lid, lift the liner out and wash shell and liner separately.
  4. Swap liners for another shape or color in the same shell.
Rigid Shell Container with Removable Silicone Liner - Patent drawing - collapsible cup
Patent figure 13 - a collapsible version: shell sections (1025, 1026, 1027) and lid (1004).

Applications

Reusable cups and tumblers

Coffee, tea and water cups with a washable silicone inside.

Lunch boxes and food storage

Divided liners, clip-on lids, collapsible boxes for travel.

Baby and toddler tableware

Soft contact surfaces in a sturdy, stable shell.

Branded merchandise

Logos or patterns molded through the base - visible through a clear shell.

Pet bowls and travel bowls

Collapsible versions with removable liners.

Where it is less suitable

  • Hot-fill vacuum insulation - the air gap is not a vacuum; it is not a thermos.
  • Single-use packaging - this is a reusable container concept.

Frequently asked questions

What touches the food or drink?

Only the flexible liner. The rigid shell holds it and gives the container its shape and grip.

How is it cleaned?

Remove the press ring or lid and lift the liner out. Shell and liner are washed separately, so there are no hidden corners.

Does the liner leak?

The liner cavity is liquid-tight, and the press ring or lid clamps the liner top to seal it. Leak tests are part of prototyping.

Is it insulated?

There is an air gap between shell and liner, but it is not a vacuum. It is not a thermos.

Which products can be made from it?

The patent shows cups, divided food boxes and collapsible cups and boxes. Kids’ tableware and pet bowls are also possible.

Can our logo be part of it?

Yes - studs on the liner pass through holes in the shell base, and the holes can be letters or a logo, visible through a clear shell.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and has lapsed, so it does not restrict anyone. Other container designs may be patented - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.

Are you affiliated with the patent owner?

No. IP2M is an independent design and manufacturing service working from the public patent document.
