Self-Folding Desk Lamp That Turns into a Phone Stand

Most desk lamps have one shape and one job. This one changes shape on its own. Its stem is a zigzag strip printed from a shape-memory polymer - a plastic that 'remembers' a shape and returns to it when warmed. Switch the lamp on and the heat from the bulb softens the stem so it unfolds and lifts the shade into a reading lamp. Press the stem down while it is still warm and let it cool, and it stays folded: the round shade becomes the back rest for a phone and an L-shaped handle becomes the ledge it stands on.

🌀

Unfolds by itself

Warmth from the lamp makes the shape-memory stem straighten and lift the shade.

📱

Folds into a phone stand

Folded, the round shade holds the back of a phone and the handle holds its bottom edge.

🔄

Turning joints

Bearings at the shade and the base let both swivel to aim the light.

🧪

4D-printed stem

The stem is printed from a shape-memory polymer - an eye-catching demonstration of smart materials.

The problem

Desks are small, and the things on them keep multiplying: a lamp, a phone stand, a charger, a pen cup. A desk lamp spends most of the day switched off, taking space while doing nothing. Most “multifunction” lamps solve this by bolting extras onto a fixed shape. The patent, filed by a university design team, takes another route: let the lamp change its own shape between two jobs.

The solution

The patent builds the lamp around a stem that moves without a motor or spring:

  1. A round lamp shade (1) with the bulb sits at the top.
  2. The stem (3) is a zigzag (S-shaped) strip printed from a shape-memory polymer. Cold, it holds a folded shape; warmed above its transition temperature, it returns to a tall, open shape.
  3. A round base (4) carries the stem. The shade and the base are joined to the stem by rotating bearings, so both can swivel.
  4. An L-shaped handle (2) sits behind the shade where it meets the stem.
  5. Switching the lamp on warms the stem, so it unfolds into a desk lamp. To make a phone stand, the user presses the handle while the stem is still warm and lets it cool - it stays folded, the shade becomes the back rest and the handle the bottom ledge.

Who it is for

  • Lighting and desk-accessory brands looking for a lamp with a visible “wow” moment in product videos - the lamp moves by itself when switched on.
  • Gift and design-store suppliers selling clever objects for desks and dorm rooms, where a lamp that is also a phone stand saves space.
  • STEM and education companies that want a working, everyday product to explain shape-memory materials and 4D printing.
  • Material and 3D-printing companies wanting a consumer showcase for smart polymers.

How it works

The main parts

No.PartWhat it does
1Lamp shadeRound hard-resin shade holding the bulb; also the phone back rest.
2HandleL-shaped; used to press the stem down and as the phone ledge.
3Shape-memory stemPrinted S-shaped strip; folds when cool, opens when warm.
4BaseRound hard-resin base; joined to the stem by a bearing.

From lamp to phone stand

  1. Switch the lamp on. The bulb warms the stem above the polymer’s transition temperature.
  2. The stem opens from its folded zigzag into a tall S-shape, lifting the shade into a reading position.
  3. For a phone stand, hold the handle and press the shade down to the angle you want while the stem is still warm.
  4. Switch off and let it cool. The polymer sets in the folded shape and holds the phone between shade and handle.

About the heat source

The patent uses an incandescent bulb, whose heat drives the change. Incandescent bulbs are now largely phased out in US general lighting, so a production version would most likely use an LED for light plus a small, controlled heating element in the stem - an engineering change to be developed and tested on prototypes.

Applications

Student desks and dorm rooms

One object instead of a lamp and a phone stand on a small desk; the phone can stand for video lessons while the lamp is off.

Bedside tables

A reading lamp at night that folds down to hold a phone as an alarm clock or for charging.

Design gifts and museum stores

The self-unfolding stem is a talking point - a product people show to friends.

Science education

Teachers can use a real household product to demonstrate shape-memory polymers and how heat triggers a shape change.

Showrooms for 3D-printing and materials companies

A working display piece that shows what printed smart materials can do.

Where it is less suitable

  • Task lighting that must stay fixed - the stem relies on temperature, so its height is not as precise or rigid as a metal arm.
  • Hot rooms and cars - high ambient temperatures could trigger the shape change on their own; the transition temperature must be chosen for the use.

Frequently asked questions

What makes the stem move?

The stem is printed from a shape-memory polymer. Below its transition temperature it stays in the shape it was last set in; warmed above it, it returns to its “remembered” open shape. In the patent the warmth comes from the lamp’s own bulb.

Why is it called “4D printing”?

4D printing means 3D printing an object that changes shape over time in response to something - here, heat. The fourth dimension is the change.

How does it become a phone stand?

While the stem is still warm, you press the handle down to fold it, then let it cool. It keeps that folded shape: the round shade supports the back of the phone and the L-shaped handle holds its bottom edge.

Can it use an LED instead of a hot bulb?

Yes, but LEDs give off little heat, so a production version would add a small heating element in the stem, switched by a button or timer. The heater power, time to unfold and touch temperature are set in design and checked on prototypes.

How many times can it fold and unfold?

The patent gives no cycle count. Shape-memory polymers lose some recovery over many cycles, so the material is selected and tested for the target life before production.

Can the stem be made without a 3D printer?

The patent describes a printed stem. For volume, we would compare printing with molding or forming the shape-memory polymer and choose the process that gives a consistent fold.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and has lapsed, so it does not restrict the design in the US or in China. Shape-memory actuators and convertible lamps may be covered by other patents - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
