Patent CN213785583U
Updated October 24, 2026Impact-Resistant Glove with a 3D-Printed Lattice Layer
Impact gloves for oil, gas, construction and mechanics usually protect the back of the hand with molded TPR rubber bars. They work, but they are stiff, hot and heavy. This glove replaces the solid padding with a lattice - a 3D-printed mesh of tiny open cells, like the midsoles of some running shoes. Each cell is a small spatial polygon whose struts run in at least three directions, so it squashes and absorbs a blow from any angle while air passes through. The lattice sits between a knitted liner and a tough outer skin, with printed TPU guards over the finger joints and a mounting area on the back of the hand for a light.
- China utility model - in force in China until Sep 2030 at most
- No filings outside China
- Work & sports gloves
- Knit liner, printed lattice, TPU, PU or nitrile skin

🕸️
Lattice padding
3D-printed open cells absorb impacts from many directions and let air through.
🛡️
Knuckle guards
Printed TPU guards cover the finger joints under the outer skin.
🧤
Three layers
Knitted liner, lattice layer and a PU, TPU or nitrile skin that keeps the lattice clean.
🔦
Accessory area
The back of the hand can carry an LED light, sensor or indicator with a battery.

The problem
Hand injuries from being struck or pinched are a familiar risk in heavy industry, and impact-resistant gloves with padding on the back of the hand are standard kit on drilling rigs, construction sites and in workshops. Most use molded rubber (TPR) bars and pads. They protect, but they stiffen the hand, trap heat and add weight, so workers take them off. The patent proposes padding that is lighter and breathes: a printed lattice.
The solution
The patent layers the glove like this:
- A liner (100) - a glove-shaped base knitted in one or more passes (“fly-knit”).
- An impact layer (200) covering at least the back of the fingers and the back of the hand, made of many lattice cells joined together.
- Each lattice cell is a 3D open network of one or more spatial polygon shapes; its struts - straight or curved - run in at least three directions, so the cell can compress and absorb a blow from different angles. The cells form a 3D array.
- An outer skin (300) of PU, TPU or high-elasticity nitrile covers everything; it can be transparent or translucent to show the lattice.
- TPU guards (400) - also made by additive manufacturing - sit between skin and lattice over the finger joints (proximal and distal phalanges).
- The skin has a wrinkled flex zone (301) at the knuckles and a diagonal texture where the knuckles meet the back of the hand, so the fist can close.
- An accessory area (500) on the back of the hand can carry sensors or indicators, such as an LED light with a battery connector.

Who it is for
- Industrial safety-glove brands selling impact gloves to oil and gas, mining, construction and utilities.
- Mechanics’ and tool brands looking for a lighter, cooler impact glove for workshop use.
- Motorcycle, MTB and tactical-glove makers interested in lattice padding instead of hard knuckle shells.
- Safety distributors wanting a visibly new technology - a see-through skin showing the lattice - for their private label.
How it works
The main parts
| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | Liner | Knitted glove base worn against the skin. |
| 200 | Lattice impact layer | 3D-printed open cells over the back of the hand and fingers. |
| 300 | Outer skin | PU, TPU or nitrile; can be transparent; protects the lattice. |
| 301 | Flex zone | Wrinkled area at the knuckles so the hand can bend. |
| 400 | TPU guards | Printed guards over the finger joints. |
| 500-506 | Accessory area | Mount for an LED light, sensor, indicator and battery parts. |

Why a lattice absorbs impact
When something strikes the back of the hand, the lattice cells collapse a little, spreading and slowing the blow before it reaches the bones. Because the struts point in several directions, the cells work for glancing blows as well as straight hits, and the open cells let air move. The patent shows several cell shapes - star-like, cage-like and crossed - which can be mixed in one layer.

Wearing it
- Put the glove on like any knit-lined glove.
- Work normally - the flex zone and lattice let the hand close.
- Clip on a light or sensor in the accessory area for dark or monitored work.
Applications
Oil, gas and drilling
Roughnecks handling pipe and tongs need back-of-hand protection they will keep wearing all shift.
Construction and steel erection
Protection against pinches and knocks when handling materials and tools.
Automotive and heavy-equipment repair
Lighter impact protection for mechanics working in engine bays and under vehicles, with a light on the hand.
Mining and tunneling
Dark, confined work where a hand-mounted LED and impact padding both help.
Motorcycle and mountain-bike gloves
Ventilated knuckle protection as an alternative to hard shells.
Where it is less suitable
- Cut-resistance needs - impact padding does not stop blades; cut-resistant liners must be added and tested separately.
- Cold-weather work - an open lattice breathes; insulated versions need a different build.
Frequently asked questions
How is a lattice better than rubber pads?
A solid rubber pad is heavy and traps heat. The lattice is mostly air: its small open cells collapse to absorb a blow and let air through. Because the struts run in several directions, it also handles glancing hits.
What impact rating will it reach?
The patent gives no test results. The rating under ANSI/ISEA 138 depends on the cell design, material and coverage, and is confirmed by an accredited lab on production samples.
Does it protect against cuts?
Impact padding does not stop blades. A cut-resistant knit liner (HPPE or aramid blends) can be used and rated separately under ANSI/ISEA 105.
Why a transparent outer skin?
The patent allows a transparent or translucent skin, which shows the printed lattice - a visible selling point - while still protecting it from snagging and dirt.
What is the accessory area for?
According to the patent, the back of the hand can carry sensing or indicating devices, such as an LED light with a battery connector - useful in dark work areas.
Can the lattice be molded instead of printed?
The patent describes printing. For volume, we would compare printing with molded lattice-style padding and choose what meets your price and rating.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patent was filed only in China, so it does not restrict the design in the US. It is in force in China until September 2030 at most, and making or selling it there needs the owner’s permission. Lattice padding and impact gloves may be covered by other US patents - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
