Waterproof Magnetic Zipper Stop That Snaps the Two Halves Together

Starting a jacket zipper is a two-handed job: you hold the box, thread the pin into it and pull the slider - awkward with gloves, a child on your arm or a bag in one hand. Magnetic stops solve this by pulling the pin into the box on their own, but a bare magnet in a garment rusts in the rain and in the washing machine. In this design each half of the stop - the box on one tape, the pin on the other - has its magnet locked inside a round plastic capsule that is ultrasonically welded to the fastener body. The halves snap together, an arm and an insert lock them in place, and the magnets stay dry.

  • China utility model - in force in China until Feb 2031 at most
  • No filings outside China
  • Zippers & garment trims
  • Molded plastic housings, sealed magnets, ultrasonic welding

🧲

Halves find each other

A magnet in the box and one in the pin pull the two zipper halves together and line them up.

💧

Magnets sealed in

Each magnet sits in a closed plastic capsule welded to its fastener, so water cannot reach it.

🔒

Mechanical lock

An arm on the pin slides into a groove on the box, and an insert drops into a slot - the stop holds under pull.

✋

One-handed start

Bring the halves close and they snap home; then pull the slider - no threading of the pin.

The problem

A separating zipper - the kind on jackets, hoodies and sleeping bags - starts at a bottom stop made of a box on one tape and a pin on the other. The pin must be threaded into the box by hand before the slider can move. With cold fingers, gloves or one hand busy, this is the most annoying step of putting on a coat. Magnetic stops help, but an exposed magnet corrodes in rain, sweat and the washing machine.

The solution

The patent makes both halves of the stop magnetic and keeps the magnets dry:

  1. The box half (1) is fixed to the first zipper tape (3); the pin half (2) to the second tape (4).
  2. Each half is built from three parts: a fastener (11 / 21) that grips the tape, a magnet (12 / 22) and a round housing (13 / 23).
  3. The magnet is placed in the housing’s cavity and the fastener is joined to the housing by ultrasonic welding. The housing walls are closed, and a sealing curved surface at the joint seals the cavity along its axis - the magnet is fully enclosed.
  4. When the halves come close, the magnets attract and pull them into place.
  5. An arm on the pin housing slides into a through groove in the box housing, and an insert block (2111) on the pin fastener drops into a slot (1111) in the box fastener. Together they form a firm stop.

Patent figure 1 - a closed zipper; the box half (1) and pin half (2) joined at the bottom of tapes (3) and (4).

Who it is for

  • Outerwear and sportswear brands that want an easy-start zipper on jackets, ski wear, rain shells and kids’ coats, where gloves and small hands make threading hard.
  • Adaptive-clothing companies designing garments for people with limited hand dexterity, arthritis or one-handed use.
  • Zipper and trim distributors supplying garment factories that want a magnetic stop which survives laundering.
  • Bag and outdoor-gear makers using separating zippers on sleeping bags, tent doors and detachable bag panels.

How it works

The main parts

Waterproof Magnetic Zipper Stop That Snaps the Two Halves Together - Patent drawing - box half exploded
Patent figure 5 - the box half taken apart: fastener (11), magnet (12) and housing (13).
No.PartWhat it does
1Box halfBottom stop on the first tape.
11First fastenerGrips the tape (groove 113); carries the slot (1111).
12First magnetSealed inside the first housing.
13First housingRound capsule with a through groove for the pin’s arm.
2Pin halfBottom stop on the second tape.
21Second fastenerGrips the tape (groove 213); carries the insert block (2111).
22Second magnetSealed inside the second housing.
23Second housingRound capsule with the locking arm.
3, 4Zipper tapesThe two sides of the garment opening.

Using it

  1. Bring the pin near the box - the magnets pull the two halves together and line them up.
  2. The stop locks - the arm enters the groove and the insert enters the slot.
  3. Pull the slider up as with any zipper.
  4. To open, run the slider to the bottom and pull the halves apart sideways against the magnets.

Patent figure 4 - box (1) and pin (2) locked together.

Applications

Kids’ jackets and school coats

Children can close their own coats without threading the pin - a strong selling point for parents and schools.

Ski, snowboard and winter work wear

Zips start with gloves on; the sealed magnets cope with snow and wet.

Rain shells and running jackets

Wet weather and frequent washing are exactly where an exposed magnet would rust.

Adaptive clothing

One-handed closing helps people with limited dexterity, a single usable hand or tremor.

Sleeping bags and outdoor gear

Separating zippers on sleeping bags and tent doors are often used in the dark; magnetic alignment helps.

Where it is less suitable

  • Heavy-duty or high-tension zippers - very wide metal zippers on workwear or luggage may need a stronger mechanical stop.
  • Medical-imaging environments - garments with magnets are not suitable for MRI settings.
  • Lowest-cost basics - magnets and welding add cost over a standard plastic stop.

Frequently asked questions

How does the zipper close with one hand?

The pin and the box each hold a magnet. Bring the pin near the box and the magnets pull it into place; an arm and an insert then lock it, and you pull the slider.

Will the magnets rust in the wash?

The design is aimed at exactly that. Each magnet is sealed inside a closed plastic housing that is welded to its fastener, so water and detergent cannot reach it. Durability is confirmed by wash testing on samples.

Can the halves come apart while I am zipping?

Once the slider moves up, the zipper teeth hold the halves together like any separating zipper. At the bottom, the arm-and-groove and insert-and-slot lock resist pulling.

Which zipper sizes does it fit?

The patent does not fix a size. The stop is designed for the coil, molded or metal zipper you use, typically #3 to #8.

Is it safe for children’s coats?

It can be, if the stop passes the pull and torque tests for small parts and the magnet stays sealed. We test children’s versions to the US rules before supply.

Can you supply complete zippers?

Yes - stops alone for your zipper supplier, or complete separating zippers with tape, teeth, slider and the magnetic stop.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China, so it does not restrict the design in the US. It is in force in China until February 2031 at most, and making or selling it there needs the owner’s permission. Magnetic zipper closures may be covered by other US patents - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
