What the claims cover, in plain language
Claim 1 - a zipper stop made of a box (on the first tape) and a pin (on the second tape). Each consists of a fastener, a magnet and a housing; the magnet sits in the housing’s cavity and the fastener and housing form one piece that seals the magnet in. The box fastener has a tape groove and a slot; the pin fastener has a tape groove and an insert block. The box housing has a through groove, the pin housing an arm that fits it. The housings have closed side walls, and a sealing curved surface at the open end seals each housing axially against its fastener. Joined by magnetic attraction, the arm enters the groove and the insert enters the slot, forming a waterproof stop.
Claims 2-10 - further features described in the patent, such as ultrasonic welding of fastener and housing, the round housing shape and the detailed shape of the slot and insert.
This is a simplified reading for orientation only. The legal scope is defined by the exact claim wording in the official Chinese document.
What this means for US production
This patent was filed only in China. It is still in force in China, so making or selling this design in China would need the owner’s permission while it lasts (at most until 2031-02-26). It has no US or other foreign counterpart and does not restrict the design outside China.
Two points to settle early:
- Other patents may exist. Magnetic zipper closures are actively patented in the US - several apparel brands and zipper makers hold patents on magnetic separable zippers and magnetic bottom stops - so a freedom-to-operate (FTO) review of the stop geometry and the locking features should come before tooling.
- Pull strength and alignment. Magnet grade and size decide how strongly the halves find each other; too weak fails to self-align, too strong is hard to separate. This is tuned on samples.
Customization and manufacturing
What can be customized
| Area | Options |
|---|---|
| Zipper size | Stops for #3, #5 or #8 coil, molded-tooth or metal zippers |
| Magnets | Neodymium grade and size for the pull force wanted |
| Housing | POM, nylon or TPU-overmolded housings; round or shaped capsule |
| Colors | Dyed to match tapes, or contrast color as a design detail |
| Supply form | Stops only, or complete separating zippers with tape, teeth and slider |
| Branding | Logo molded on the housing, custom puller to match |
Things to plan for (US market)
- CPSIA and children’s apparel - stops sold on kids’ coats must meet lead-in-substrate and surface-coating limits, need a Children’s Product Certificate and third-party testing, and must not come off as small parts (pull and torque testing per 16 CFR 1500.51-53 on the garment).
- Magnets in children’s products - any magnet that could detach and be swallowed is a serious hazard; the sealed housing must pass pull tests so the magnet cannot escape.
- California Prop 65 - plastics and coatings should be tested for listed substances.
- Laundering durability - garment brands normally require wash tests (for example AATCC home-laundering cycles) on trims.
How a project runs
- Inquiry - zipper type and size, garment, colors and quantity.
- Design - stop geometry for your zipper, magnet size, weld joint.
- Prototype - samples tested for alignment, holding force, separation feel and wash durability.
- Pilot run - small batch sewn into garments for wear and lab testing.
- Production - volume production, carded or bulk packing and shipping.
Quantities & timeline
The fasteners and housings each need multi-cavity injection molds, the magnet insertion and ultrasonic welding need fixtures, and complete zippers need tape, tooth and slider set-up. Most development time goes into the weld seal and the pull-force balance. Send us your zipper size, garment type, colors, quantity and target price and we will reply with options.
