Motorized Shelf Display That Presents a Product to Shoppers

In-store promotion usually means paying a person to stand in the aisle. This shelf unit does part of that job. A product is strapped to a small L-shaped holder on the front of a motorized push rod. When a sensor sees a shopper, the rod lifts the product up over the shelf's price rail, sets it down further forward, facing the aisle, and nudges it back and forth to catch the eye. Lamps light opaque packs from above or bottles from behind, and the unit can count passers-by, play a voice message or project an ad.

  • China utility model - in force in China until Apr 2031 at most
  • No filings outside China
  • Retail displays & POP

The problem

On a crowded shelf, one product among hundreds is easy to miss, and the usual fix - a promoter in the aisle - costs wages every hour the store is open. Static shelf talkers and wobblers are cheap but easy to ignore. The patent sets out to replace part of the human promoter with a compact device that sits on an ordinary shelf.

The solution

The patent’s device is a small box that moves one product toward the shopper:

  1. A housing (1) on the shelf contains a motor (4A), a push rod (4B), a slider (4C) and a linkage (4D) of two swing arms.
  2. A product holder (3) - an L-shaped seat - is fixed to the front of the push rod. The product is held on it with an elastic band (8).
  3. As the slider moves forward, the linkage makes the rod first rise and move forward, lifting the product over the shelf’s price rail, then lower and move forward to the presenting position in front of the shelf, facing the aisle.
  4. In front, the rod can rock back and forth for a set time (the patent mentions about 2 seconds) to attract attention, then reverses the path to bring the product back.
  5. A sensor unit (5) with two sensors and a projector (5C) detects people and counts them; a gooseneck lamp (6) and a panel lamp (10) light the product.

Patent figure 1 - the unit on a shelf (P): housing (1), product holder (3), sensor unit (5) and gooseneck lamp (6).

Who it is for

  • Retail display and POP (point-of-purchase) companies looking for a motorized display with a clear mechanical story.
  • Beverage, snack, cosmetics and health brands running in-store promotions or product launches.
  • Retail-media and shopper-marketing agencies that need shelf devices with people counting.
  • Store-fixture suppliers offering an add-on to standard shelving.

How it works

One presentation cycle

Motorized Shelf Display That Presents a Product to Shoppers - Patent drawing - first movement
Patent figure 4 - first movement: the slider pushes the linkage and the holder (3) rises and moves forward over the shelf edge.
  1. A shopper approaches - the presence sensor wakes the unit; the projector and speaker can start.
  2. Lift and forward - the holder rises and moves forward until the product is above the price rail.
  3. Down and forward - the product settles in front of the shelf, label facing the aisle.
  4. Attract - the product rocks back and forth briefly.
  5. Return - the same path in reverse brings the product back onto the shelf.
Motorized Shelf Display That Presents a Product to Shoppers - Patent drawing - second movement
Patent figure 5 - second movement: the holder moves down and forward to the presenting position, its seat nearly level.

Products it can hold

The patent names cans, bottles, bags and boxes. The holder’s back adjusts in height, a removable sleeve fits different sizes, and an elastic band holds the product. Bottles can be lit from behind through holes in the holder.

Motorized Shelf Display That Presents a Product to Shoppers - Patent drawing - can on the holder
Patent figure 13 - an opaque can (9) held on the holder by the elastic band (8).

Applications

Product launches in supermarkets

A new flavor or pack moves out to meet shoppers for the launch period.

Beverage and energy-drink promotions

Bottles lit from behind and pushed toward the aisle at eye level.

Cosmetics and personal care

Premium items presented one at a time on a beauty shelf.

Convenience stores and pharmacies

Counter-top and shelf promotions where space for a human promoter is limited.

Trade shows and showrooms

An eye-catching, self-running product presenter for booths.

Where it is less suitable

  • Heavy or very large products - the push rod and holder are sized for single cans, bottles and small boxes.
  • Low-margin, everyday items - a motorized unit makes sense for promotions and launches, not permanent use on every SKU.

Frequently asked questions

How does the product get past the shelf’s price rail?

According to the patent, the push rod first moves up and forward so the product clears the rail, then down and forward to the presenting position. A two-arm linkage turns the slider’s straight-line motion into this path.

What products can it hold?

The patent names cans, bottles, bags and boxes. The holder’s back adjusts in height, a sleeve fits different sizes, and an elastic band holds the product. Heavy or large items are not suitable.

When does it move?

When the presence sensor detects someone in front of the shelf. The product can rock back and forth for a set time - the patent gives about 2 seconds as an example - and then returns.

Does it collect shopper data?

The patent describes a sensor that counts passers-by and a link to a phone or computer through a communication module or USB. We recommend simple presence and count sensors rather than cameras to stay clear of privacy issues.

How is it powered?

The patent includes a power supply but does not specify it. A plug-in adapter suits permanent fixtures; a rechargeable battery suits short promotions.

Can it play our ad or message?

Yes - the patent describes a voice player and a projector whose content and timing can be set, including remotely.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China, so it does not restrict the design in the US. It is in force in China until April 2031 at most, and making or selling it there needs the owner’s permission. Motorized retail displays may be covered by other patents - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.

Are you affiliated with the patent owner?

No. IP2M is an independent design and manufacturing service working from the public patent document.
