Rotary Cup Holder with Adjustable Clamping Arm

Standard cup holders are often fixed in one position or require tools to adjust. This design solves this by integrating a rotary joint with an indexed positioning system. The clamping arm can rotate around the cup holder base, locking into place at specific intervals via an elastic clip engaging with circumferential grooves. Additionally, the main body attaches to the mounting block through a simple slide-and-snap mechanism, enabling users to quickly swap or remove the holder without screws or complex hardware.

The problem

Many accessory holders, such as those for strollers or bicycles, are either rigidly fixed or require manual adjustment with knobs and screws. If the angle is wrong, the user must loosen the entire assembly, which is time-consuming. Furthermore, attaching the holder to the vehicle frame often involves multiple fasteners, making installation difficult for consumers and complicating maintenance or replacement. There is a need for a holder that allows angular adjustment of the gripping part while maintaining a secure, tool-free connection to the mounting surface.

The solution

This patent describes a cup holder composed of a cup holder component (1) and a clamping component (2). The clamping component is rotatably connected to the holder. A positioning device (3) fixes their relative rotation. This device uses positioning grooves (31) on the inner wall of the clamping component and an elastic clamping piece (32) on the holder. When rotated, the clamping piece deforms to skip over grooves and then snaps back to lock the position. The holder body also features a detachable snap-fit mechanism involving a sliding portion (131) and a clamping position (122) with arc-shaped protrusions, allowing quick attachment and removal.

Who it is for

  • Stroller Manufacturers: Brands looking to offer adjustable drink holders that attach easily to pushchairs without complex tooling requirements for the end-user.
  • Bicycle Accessory Makers: Companies producing handlebar-mounted accessories where quick release and angle adjustment are valued features for commuters.
  • Outdoor Gear Retailers: Wholesalers stocking versatile holders for camping chairs, wheelchairs, or mobility aids that need secure but adjustable positioning.
  • Aftermarket Part Suppliers: Distributors replacing broken or ill-fitting original equipment holders on vehicles or carts with a universal, easy-install option.

How it works

The main parts

No.PartWhat it does
1Cup Holder ComponentIncludes the body (12) holding the cup and the connecting block (13).
2Clamping ComponentRotates around the holder; includes arms (22, 23) to grip the mount.
3Positioning DeviceGrooves (31) and elastic clip (32) lock the rotational angle.
11Protruding RingForms part of the interface between the block and the clamp.
12Support BodyThe cylindrical section that holds the water cup.
13Connecting BlockConnects the support body to the clamping arm; has sliding parts.
121Sliding SlotAllows the connecting block to slide along axis A.
122Clamping PositionSecures the block to the body via a snap-fit hole and protrusion.
32Elastic Clamping PieceDeforms to engage/disengage positioning grooves.

Operating steps

  1. Attach to Mount: The clamping component (2) grips the stroller bar or bike handle. The size of the opening can be adjusted if equipped with an expandable mechanism.
  2. Connect Holder: Slide the support body (12) onto the connecting block (13) along the sliding slot (121). Push down until the sliding portion (131) snaps into the clamping position (122), locked by the protrusion (1222).
  3. Adjust Angle: Rotate the clamping component relative to the holder. The elastic clamping piece (32) compresses into its clearance space, passes over a groove, and snaps into the next positioning groove (31) to fix the new angle.
  4. Remove: Press the connecting block downward against the second arc-shaped surface (1224) of the protrusion to disengage the snap-fit and lift the holder off the block.

Applications

Stroller Accessories

Parents can attach the holder to the pushchair frame and rotate the cup cradle to face the child or themselves without loosening the clamp. The snap-fit body allows for quick cleaning or replacement.

Bicycle Handlebars

Commuters benefit from being able to tilt the cup holder up or down to clear their line of sight or accommodate different bottle sizes. The secure locking prevents the holder from spinning during rough rides.

Wheelchair Mobility Aids

Users with limited hand strength can install the holder easily due to the tool-free snap-fit. The indexing allows precise positioning within reach without needing to tighten bolts repeatedly.

Camping and Outdoor Chairs

On folding chairs with tubular frames, the clamping arm provides a stable grip. The ability to rotate the holder means drinks can be placed closer to the user’s side depending on how they sit.

Where it is less suitable

  • High-Vibration Industrial Machinery: The plastic snap-fit and elastic clips may fatigue under constant heavy vibration compared to metal bolted assemblies.
  • Extreme Temperature Environments: Standard glass-filled nylon or plastic materials may become brittle in extreme cold or soften in high heat, affecting the retention force of the positioning clips.
  • Fixed-Angle Requirements: For applications where the orientation never changes, a simpler, cheaper fixed bracket would suffice.

Frequently asked questions

How does the angle adjustment work?

The clamping arm rotates around the cup holder base. Inside, there are small grooves arranged in a circle. An elastic clip on the base snaps into these grooves. To change the angle, you simply turn the arm; the clip pops out of one groove and clicks into the next. This lets you set the holder at discrete, stable positions without tools.

Is the cup holder permanently attached to the clamp?

No. The cup holder body connects to the mounting block via a slide-and-snap mechanism. You align the block with the slot on the body, slide it in, and press down until it clicks into a locking hole. To remove it, you press down again to disengage the lock and slide it out. This makes it easy to take the holder off for cleaning or storage.

Will it fit my stroller or bicycle?

The design includes a clamping component that grips a tube. Compatibility depends on the diameter of the tube your stroller or bike uses. We can customize the inner diameter of the clamp to fit common sizes like 22mm or 25mm handlebars and pushchair frames. Please confirm your tube diameter before ordering.

Does the plastic break easily?

The patent specifies materials like glass-filled nylon for structural parts. These are chosen for their strength and elasticity. However, like all plastics, they can degrade under prolonged UV exposure or extreme temperatures. For outdoor use, we recommend adding UV stabilizers to the material formulation.

Can I use it for large water bottles?

Yes. The support body (the part holding the cup) can be resized. Standard designs often fit 16oz disposable cups, but we can manufacture larger diameters for 32oz thermoses or sports bottles. The snap-fit connection remains the same regardless of the cup size.

Why is there a “clearance space” mentioned in the patent?

When you rotate the clamp, the elastic clip has to bend inward to jump over the grooves. The clearance space ensures that the clip doesn’t rub against the housing walls when it deforms. This reduces friction and prevents the mechanism from jamming.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent CN215245266U is registered only in China and is currently in force there. It does not restrict sales in the US directly. However, cup holders are a competitive category with many existing US patents. We strongly advise a freedom-to-operate check to ensure your specific version doesn’t infringe on other intellectual property rights held by major brands.
