Telescopic Folding Table with Extension Panel and Built-In Trolley

Standard folding tables offer only two states: open or closed. This design adds a third working size by letting the two main panels slide apart so an insert panel drops in between them, held flush by interlocking grooves and lugs molded into the edges. The hollow blow-molded panels keep weight down while maintaining stiffness. When the event is over and the table is folded flat, it does not just sit there waiting to be carried. Foldable wheels swing down from the bottom of the tabletop, a pull rod slides out from one end, and the whole unit becomes a trolley you can roll to the truck or storage room. A secondary bearing frame also draws out from underneath to support items during transport. The insert panel stores neatly on the way back, clipped to the legs by C-shaped clips built into its underside.

The problem

Event organizers, tailgaters, and vendors often need different table lengths at the same venue, but carrying multiple tables takes up vehicle space and requires extra labor. Standard folding tables come in one fixed size. When a longer surface is needed, users push two separate tables together, leaving an uneven seam that catches plates and cups. After the event, loading heavy folding tables into a truck strains workers’ backs, especially when the ground is unpaved or the distance from the setup area to the vehicle is long.

The solution

This telescopic folding table addresses both the sizing and the transport issues within a single unit.

  1. The tabletop (100) consists of a left main panel (1a) and a right main panel (1b). Both are hollow blow-molded parts.
  2. Each main panel connects to the supporting frame (4) through a sliding mechanism. By pulling the panels apart along the length direction, a neutral position (10) opens between them.
  3. A movable panel (1c) fits exactly into this neutral position (10), extending the table’s length. One movable panel is described in the preferred embodiment, though more than one is possible.
  4. The butt joint surfaces of all three panels carry staggered grooves (14) and lugs (13). When pushed together, the lugs (13) of one panel embed into the grooves (14) of the next, locking the upper surfaces flush.
  5. When the table is folded, the supporting frame (4) pivots around shafts (411) of the pivot devices (41), and the foot rest units (2) fold inward.
  6. Two pulley pieces (3) with wheels (31) are mounted at the bottom of the tabletop (100). In the unfolded state, they fold flat against the bottom. In the folded state, they extend downward to contact the ground.
  7. A pull rod (5) sits in a T-shape relative to the pulley pieces (3) and slides out from the edge of the tabletop (100) to serve as a towing handle, converting the folded table into a trolley.

Who it is for

  • Outdoor furniture brands looking for a multi-size folding table that stands out from standard bi-fold models in catalogs and retail aisles.
  • Event rental companies that set up banquets, trade shows, and parties, where crews need to change table lengths quickly and move gear across parking lots without hand-carrying every piece.
  • Wholesalers supplying big-box retailers who sell blow-molded tables for tailgating, camping, and home use, and want a product with a visible functional difference on the shelf.
  • Catering equipment distributors serving food trucks and pop-up vendors who require a compact table that rolls like a cart when broken down.

How it works

The main parts

4Supporting framePivot device (41), longitudinal rods (42) and transverse rods (43).
5Pull rodSlides out from the tabletop edge to act as a trolley handle.
6Bearing frameSlides out from under the tabletop to support items during transport.
8Sliding railStrip-shaped plate fixed to the main panels, with sliding grooves (81).
9Pin blocking pieceConnected to the longitudinal rod (42); rides inside the sliding groove (81).
13LugProtrusion on the panel edge for interlocking.
14GrooveRecess on the panel edge that receives the lug (13).
15JackCorner receptacle for accessories such as a lamp pole (19).
17Clamping pieceC-shaped clip under the movable panel to store it on the leg (21).

Operating steps

  1. Unfold the table - Swing the foot rest units (2) outward until the supporting frame (4) locks. The pulley pieces (3) fold up flat against the tabletop bottom.
  2. Extend the surface - Pull the main panels (1a, 1b) apart. The sliding rails (8) glide along the longitudinal support rods (42), guided by the pin blocking pieces (9) inside the sliding grooves (81). Stop when the neutral position (10) matches the width of the movable panel (1c).
  3. Insert the panel - Place the movable panel (1c) into the gap. Push the main panels inward so the lugs (13) and grooves (14) interlock, forming a continuous flat surface.
  4. Convert to trolley - Remove the movable panel (1c) and clip it to a leg (21) using the clamping pieces (17). Fold the table flat. Swing the pulley pieces (3) down so the wheels (31) touch the ground. Pull the rod (5) outward and tilt the table to roll it.

Applications

Trade show booths

Exhibitors often need a short table for registration and a longer one for product displays later in the day. The sliding panels allow one table to serve both layouts without bringing a second unit. The trolley function lets staff roll the table across convention center floors instead of carrying it.

Tailgating and camping

Tailgaters unload gear in parking lots far from their spots. A folding table that rolls on its own wheels saves trips to the vehicle. The hollow blow-molded panels resist moisture and wipe clean after outdoor meals.

Catering and buffet lines

Caterers adjust buffet lengths depending on guest counts. The insert panel bridges the gap smoothly because the interlocking lugs prevent plates from rocking over a seam. The corner jack holds a lamp pole for evening events.

Community and club events

Volunteers setting up community halls often lack dollies or carts. The built-in pull rod and wheels mean the folded table moves like luggage. The C-shaped clips keep the insert panel attached to the legs so it does not get lost in storage.

Home workshops and garages

Homeowners use folding tables for projects and fold them away afterward. The movable panel provides extra length for large assemblies, and the trolley mode helps move heavy tools stacked on the folded surface across a concrete floor.

Where it is less suitable

  • Heavy industrial workbenches - blow-molded panels are designed for general loads, not for mounting heavy vises or machinery.
  • Permanent dining furniture - the visible pivot mechanisms and hollow panels suit utility use rather than formal interiors.
  • Tables requiring built-in power outlets - the patent describes no electrical routing or socket integration.

Frequently asked questions

How does the table change length?

The two main panels slide apart along rails mounted to the supporting frame. When pulled outward, they leave a gap in the middle. The movable panel drops into this gap, and the edges lock together using molded grooves and lugs.

What keeps the panels aligned when joined?

The butt edges of the blow-molded panels have staggered protrusions (lugs) and recesses (grooves). When pushed together, the lugs of one panel seat into the grooves of the adjacent panel, preventing lateral shift and keeping the top surface flush.

How does the trolley function work?

When the table is folded flat, two wheel assemblies pivot downward from the bottom until they touch the ground. A handle (pull rod) slides out from one end of the tabletop. You tilt the folded table back and roll it like a suitcase.

Where does the insert panel go during transport?

The bottom of the movable panel has C-shaped clips. When the table is folded and rolled as a trolley, these clips snap onto one of the table legs so the panel stays attached to the unit.

What material are the panels made of?

The patent specifies hollow blow-molded panels. In this product category, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) is the standard resin used for blow-molded folding tables due to its impact resistance and weather tolerance.

How much weight can the table hold?

The patent text does not provide load ratings. Load capacity depends on the wall thickness of the blow-molded panels, the diameter of the steel frame tubes, and the sliding rail design. These parameters are set in design and confirmed on prototypes through static and dynamic load testing.

Is there a place for an umbrella or light?

Yes. The patent describes a jack (receptacle) at the corner of one main panel. It accepts a pole, such as a lamp pole, and comes with a plug cover to keep the surface flat when the pole is not installed.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and is currently in force there until at most 2031-10-12 (if annual fees are paid). There is no US counterpart, so this specific patent does not restrict manufacturing or sales in the United States. However, folding tables are covered by numerous US patents, so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
