Swivel-Pin Skateboard Truck with Rubber Sleeve

A standard skateboard truck has a cast hanger, a kingpin, a pivot cup, two bushings and a stack of washers. This patent replaces most of that with a few simple parts. A single vertical pin turns in the baseplate; its square head sits in a larger square pocket, so the turn is limited. At the bottom, a clamp around the axle hangs on a cross pin, so the axle can rock left and right. A rubber sleeve on the pin pushes back against the clamp - lean on the board, the axle tilts and steers, let go and it centers.

🔩

Few parts

Baseplate, one pin, an axle clamp, a cross pin and a rubber sleeve replace a cast hanger and kingpin stack.

↔️

Tilting axle

The axle clamp rocks on a cross pin, so leaning on the board tilts the axle and steers.

🧭

Limited swivel

The pin's square head turns in a larger square pocket - the corners stop it at a set angle.

🛞

Self-centering and cushioned

A rubber sleeve returns the axle to center; slotted holes let the board sink slightly on bumps.

The problem

The truck is the most stressed part of a skateboard: it carries the rider, takes the impacts and does the steering. A conventional truck is a casting plus a kingpin, pivot cup, two bushings, washers and a nut - more parts, more machining and more assembly than a children’s board, a beginner cruiser or a promotional board really needs. The patent itself points to the complexity of existing designs as the problem.

The solution

The patent builds a truck from simple, mostly stamped or turned parts:

  1. A flat baseplate (1) bolts to the deck.
  2. A vertical pin (3) passes through the baseplate and can turn in it. Its square head (20) sits in a larger square pocket (15), so the corners stop the turn at a set angle.
  3. At the lower end, a clamp (4) - an open ring with two ears - grips the axle (5) in a groove (11). A cross pin (10) through the ears and the pin lets the axle rock left and right.
  4. A rubber sleeve (6) on the pin sits between the baseplate and the clamp. When the rider leans, the clamp tilts and squeezes one side of the sleeve; when the rider straightens up, the sleeve pushes it back.
  5. The cross-pin holes are vertical slots (9), so the deck can sink slightly against the sleeve on a bump and come back up.

Who it is for

  • Ride-on and toy brands making kids’ skateboards, mini cruisers and balance boards.
  • Board brands wanting a low-cost truck for entry-level complete boards.
  • Sporting goods OEMs that make complete boards and want fewer parts per truck.

How it works

The main parts

Patent figure 3 - exploded view: second bearing (16), baseplate (1), pin (3), cross pin (10), first bearing (13), rubber sleeve (6), gasket (12), axle (5) with groove (11) and clamp (4).
No.PartWhat it does
1BaseplateBolts to the deck; through hole (14) and square pocket (15).
3PinTurns in the baseplate; square head (20) limits the turn.
4ClampRing (7) around the axle with two ears (8) and vertical slots (9).
5AxleCarries the wheels; groove (11) locates the clamp.
6Rubber sleeveCenters the axle and cushions bumps.
10Cross pinLets the clamp and axle rock on the pin.
12GasketBetween sleeve and clamp; turned-down edge covers the clamp.
13, 16BearingsLet the pin turn smoothly under load.
17-19Return partsOptional spring or metal leaf in the square pocket to re-center the pin.

Steering

  1. The rider leans to one side.
  2. The deck pushes down on one side of the rubber sleeve, and the axle tilts on the cross pin.
  3. The tilted axle turns the wheels and the board carves; the pin can also swivel within its square stop.
  4. Standing straight, the sleeve (and the optional return spring) brings the axle back to center.

Patent figure 4 - top view: square head (20) of the pin in the square pocket (15), with a return part (17).

Cushioning

Because the cross pin rides in vertical slots, a bump pushes the deck, baseplate and pin down a little against the rubber sleeve, and the sleeve lifts them back afterwards.

Patent figure 5 - the clamp (4): ring (7), ears (8) and vertical slots (9).

Applications

Kids’ skateboards

A simple, low-cost truck for small boards where easy turning matters more than tricks.

Mini cruisers and penny-style boards

Relaxed carving for short rides.

Balance and training boards

Boards for learning weight shift, where a soft self-centering truck helps.

Promotional and gift boards

Complete boards built to a price with fewer truck parts.

Where it is less suitable

  • Street and park skating - tricks, grinds and hard landings need a forged or cast truck tested for those loads.
  • Downhill and high speed - stability at speed needs a precisely tuned truck geometry.

Frequently asked questions

How does it steer?

When the rider leans, the axle clamp rocks on its cross pin and squeezes one side of the rubber sleeve; the tilted axle turns the wheels. The pin can also swivel within its square stop.

Does it return to straight by itself?

Yes. According to the patent, the rubber sleeve pushes the axle back when the rider stands straight, and optional springs or a metal leaf in the square pocket re-center the pin.

Can the turning be made tighter or looser?

Yes - by the sleeve hardness and the size of the square pocket that limits the swivel. We tune both for the rider group.

Is it suitable for tricks?

We do not recommend it for street or park skating. It is aimed at kids’ boards, cruisers and training boards, where simplicity and easy turning matter most.

Does it fit standard decks?

The baseplate can be drilled to the common skateboard bolt pattern, so it can fit standard decks; we confirm the pattern and height in design.

What testing is needed for the US?

Strength and durability testing of complete boards (ASTM F2847 is commonly used), plus CPSIA testing and certificates for boards meant for children.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and has lapsed, so it does not restrict the design in the US or in China. Skateboard truck designs are actively patented in the US - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
