Self-Renewing Glue-Roller Mosquito Trap

Glue-board insect traps work, but the boards fill up and must be replaced again and again. In this trap the sticky surface is a slowly turning roller. A glue box drips fresh glue onto it, a UV lamp draws the insects in, and on the far side a scraper wipes off the used glue and the catch into a collection tray. The sticky surface renews itself as it turns.

  • China utility model - in force in China
  • No filings outside China
  • Insect control device
  • UV lamp, small motor, no pesticide

🔄

Self-renewing sticky surface

A slowly turning roller is coated with fresh glue from a reservoir as it turns.

💡

UV lure lamp

A lamp tube in front of the roller attracts mosquitoes and other flying insects.

🧹

Scrapes itself clean

A scraper on the far side wipes used glue and insects off the roller into a tray.

🚫

No glue boards, no spray

No sticky papers to replace and no insecticide - the trap catches by glue only.

The problem

Light traps with glue boards are widely used against mosquitoes and flies because they use no insecticide and give no electric zap. Their drawback, as the patent describes it, is the glue board: it fills up, has to be replaced often, costs money every time and is unpleasant to handle.

The solution

The patent turns the glue board into a self-renewing roller:

  1. A roller (2) runs across a frame (1) and is turned slowly by a motor (7).
  2. Above it, a glue box (3) with a lid (32) has a drip slot (31) and guide plates (33). Glue flows out and coats the roller evenly as it turns.
  3. A lure lamp tube (5) in front of the roller attracts insects, which stick to the glue.
  4. Behind the roller, a scraper (4) - tangent to the roller, with a deflector lip (41) - wipes off the used glue and the caught insects.
  5. They fall into a collection tray (6) in the bottom of the frame, which is emptied from time to time.
  6. A cover (9) encloses the motor and the electrical parts (8); a mesh guard (10) lets the light out but keeps fingers away from the roller.
Self-Renewing Glue-Roller Mosquito Trap - Patent drawing - cross-section
Patent figure 2 - cross-section: glue box (3) with drip slot (31) and guide plate (33), lamp (5), roller (2), scraper (4) with lip (41), collection tray (6) and mesh guard (10).

Who it is for

  • Pest-control product brands selling light traps for homes, patios and businesses.
  • Commercial kitchen, food-plant and hospitality suppliers who use insect light traps every day.
  • Farm, stable and greenhouse suppliers fighting flies and mosquitoes.

How it works

The main parts

Self-Renewing Glue-Roller Mosquito Trap - Patent drawing - exploded view
Patent figure 3 - exploded view: frame (1), roller (2), glue box (3) with lid (32), scraper (4, 41), lamp (5), tray (6), motor (7), electrical parts (8), motor cover (9) and mesh guard (10).
No.PartWhat it does
1FrameHolds the roller, glue box, lamp and tray.
2RollerTurns slowly; carries the glue that catches insects.
3Glue boxGlue reservoir with lid (32), drip slot (31) and guide plates (33).
4ScraperWipes used glue and insects off the roller; deflector lip (41).
5Lure lamp tubeAttracts insects; sits in front of the roller.
6Collection trayCatches the scraped glue and insects.
7MotorTurns the roller slowly; speed can be adjusted.
8Electrical partsPower the lamp and motor.
9CoverEncloses motor and electrics.
10Mesh guardLets the light through, guards the roller.

Running it

Self-Renewing Glue-Roller Mosquito Trap - Patent drawing - assembled trap
Patent figure 1 - the assembled trap: glue box (3) and lid (32), lamp (5) behind the mesh guard (10), tray (6) and motor cover (9) with the power cord.
  1. Fill the glue box (3) and close the lid (32).
  2. Switch on - usually in the evening. The lamp (5) lights and the motor (7) turns the roller (2) slowly.
  3. Glue drips through the slot (31) and spreads evenly on the roller.
  4. Insects fly to the light and stick to the roller.
  5. As the roller turns, the scraper (4) wipes off the catch into the tray (6).
  6. Empty the tray and top up the glue when needed.

The patent notes that the motor speed can be set steplessly, for example with a time relay that sets how long one turn takes.

Applications

Patios, porches and backyards

Evening mosquito control where people sit outside (under cover from rain).

Restaurants and commercial kitchens

Flying-insect control without sprays near food preparation.

Food processing and warehouses

Continuous trapping that needs less hands-on board changing.

Farms, stables and greenhouses

Flies and flying pests around animals and plants.

Hotels and resorts

Outdoor bars, terraces and walkways.

Where it is less suitable

  • Heavy rain exposure - the glue box and electrics need shelter or a weatherproof version.
  • Insects not drawn to light - light traps work on flying insects that respond to UV.

Frequently asked questions

How does it catch mosquitoes?

A UV lamp attracts flying insects to a slowly turning roller coated with glue. They stick to the roller, and a scraper later wipes them into a tray.

Why is the roller better than a glue board?

The roller is re-coated with fresh glue from a reservoir as it turns, so there are no boards to replace - only glue to top up and a tray to empty.

Does it use insecticide?

No. It catches insects with light and glue only.

How often does it need attention?

That depends on the glue box size and the number of insects. The patent gives no figures; refill and emptying intervals are set during design and testing.

Can it be used outdoors?

Under cover - patios, porches, stables. A weather-resistant version can be designed.

What rules apply in the US?

Electrical safety certification for a mains appliance, and EPA rules for pest-control devices (made in an EPA-registered establishment, truthful labeling).

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China, so it does not restrict the design in the US. It is still in force in China, where making or selling it would need the owner’s permission. Other insect-trap designs may be patented - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.

Are you affiliated with the patent owner?

No. IP2M is an independent design and manufacturing service working from the public patent document.
