Patent CN217671900U
Updated October 24, 2026Slide-Action Retractable Pen with a Friction-Loaded Cam That Ignores Gravity
Pens that extend and retract the tip by a slide or pull of the barrel - instead of a click button - are a newer style that designers like for its clean look and quiet action. The patent says the earlier versions had a flaw: gravity could disturb the latch, so the tip sometimes did not stay where the user put it. This design guides a rotating follower through a track with a tip-out boss and switching walls, like the heart cam in a click pen, and adds a fastener that keeps steady pressure on the follower. The extra friction holds both positions firmly in any orientation. The latch parts snap together into one module for fast assembly.
- China utility model - in force in China until Jun 2032 at most
- No filings outside China
- Pens & writing instruments
- Molded plastic or metal barrel, spring, cam module

↕️
Slide, don't click
The tip is extended and retracted by moving a section of the pen relative to the barrel.
🧲
Holds against gravity
A fastener presses the rotating follower, adding friction so the latch does not flip when the pen is shaken or inverted.
🧭
Guided cam track
A tip-out boss, switching walls and limit walls guide the follower between two stable positions.
🔧
One-piece latch module
Latch, follower and fastener are pre-assembled and dropped into the barrel.

The problem
Click pens are everywhere, and the click is part of the problem: it is noisy in meetings and classrooms, and the button spoils clean barrel designs. Slide or pull-action pens - where the user moves part of the barrel to extend the tip - answer that, and they have become popular in design-led stationery. The patent explains that existing pull-action mechanisms resist gravity poorly: because the latching parts move freely, the weight of the parts can upset the latch and the tip does not always stay where the user left it.
The solution
The patent keeps the familiar two-position cam but loads it with steady pressure:
- An outer barrel (1) holds the refill (5) and a return spring (3).
- A positioning piece (7) fixed at the tail of the barrel - by snap fit, thread, adhesive or magnet - carries a shaped cam track (71).
- An adjusting piece (4) slides inside the positioning piece and carries a rotating follower (82) on a boss (412). The follower’s tip (821) runs in the cam track.
- The track has a tip-out boss (713), a long switching wall (71B), a retract switching wall (711), a tip-out limit wall (716), a retract helper wall (717), and small buffer and error grooves (7D, 7F) to reduce wear.
- In the retracted state the spring holds the follower at position A; in the writing state the boss traps it at position B against the spring.
- A rotating fastener (4121) clips onto the adjusting piece and its pressure part (41212) presses the follower onto it, whichever way it turns. According to the patent, this pressure and friction give the mechanism its resistance to gravity.

Who it is for
- Design-led stationery brands that want a quiet, button-free pen as a signature product.
- Corporate gift and promotional pen suppliers - a slide-action pen stands out in a catalog full of click pens, and the smooth barrel is a large logo area.
- Pen factories looking for a pull-action mechanism module they can fit into their own barrels.
- Gel-pen and fineliner makers - the patent states the mechanism can carry ballpoint, gel and other refills.
How it works
The main parts

| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Outer barrel | Body of the pen; carries the clip (T). |
| 3 | Return spring | Pushes the mechanism toward the retracted position. |
| 4 | Adjusting piece | The moving part the user slides; carries the follower boss (412). |
| 5 | Refill | Ballpoint, gel or other refill. |
| 7, 71 | Positioning piece and cam track | Fixed at the tail; the track defines the two latch positions. |
| 82, 821 | Rotating follower and its tip | Swings left and right as it travels the track. |
| 713 | Tip-out boss | Holds the follower in the writing position. |
| 711, 71B, 716, 717 | Switching and limit walls | Steer the follower in and out and stop over-travel. |
| 4121 | Rotating fastener | Clips on and presses the follower to add friction. |
Using it
- Hold the barrel and slide the adjusting piece. The follower runs along the switching wall and drops behind the tip-out boss - the tip is out.
- Write. The spring and the boss hold the follower at position B; the fastener’s pressure keeps it there even when the pen is shaken.
- Slide again. The follower is guided past the boss by the retract walls and the spring returns it to position A - the tip is in.
- To change the refill, the front part of the pen unscrews; the clip can also be removed, and the patent notes it can serve as a cover.

The patent shows three versions (figures 1-5, 6-8 and 9-11) with different track and boss details; the third adds a helper slope on the tip-out boss.
Applications
Offices and meetings
A silent pen with no button to fidget with suits boardrooms, libraries and shared offices where click pens annoy.
Premium and gift pens
Metal or lacquered barrels without a push button look cleaner; the slide action itself becomes a talking point in gift boxes.
Corporate and event merchandise
Promotional pens are bought by the thousand; a distinctive action helps a brand’s pen get kept instead of thrown away.
Students and exam halls
Silent operation matters in exam rooms; gel refills give students the smooth line they prefer.
Medical and lab pocket pens
Pens carried in coat pockets are turned upside down constantly; a latch that holds its state avoids ink marks from tips that pop out on their own.
Where it is less suitable
- The cheapest stick pens - a cam module and spring add cost compared with a capped disposable pen.
- Very thick multi-color pens - the mechanism is designed around a single refill.
Frequently asked questions
How do you extend the tip without a button?
You hold the barrel and slide the adjusting section. A rotating follower travels through a cam track and latches behind a boss, holding the tip out; sliding again guides it past the boss and the spring pulls the tip back in.
What does “pressure-stabilized” mean?
A small rotating fastener presses the follower against its mount at all times. According to the patent, this pressure and friction stop gravity from disturbing the latch, so the tip stays where you set it when the pen is shaken or held upside down.
Is it silent?
There is no click button, and the slide action is much quieter than a click pen. The exact sound and feel are tuned on prototypes through the track shape and spring force.
Which refills can it use?
The patent names ballpoint and gel refills among others. We design the barrel around a standard refill format so replacements are easy to buy.
Can the refill be replaced?
Yes. The front of the pen or of the adjusting piece unscrews to change the refill and the spring.
Can you put our logo on it?
Yes - pad printing, laser engraving on metal barrels, or full-wrap printing. The clean barrel without a button leaves a large print area.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patent was filed only in China, so it does not restrict the design in the US. It is in force in China until June 2032 at most, and making or selling it there needs the owner’s permission. Retractable pen mechanisms may be covered by other US patents - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
