Patent CN218752585U
Updated November 3, 2026Foldable Box Container with Steel Pipe Reinforcement and Interlocking Side Panels
Standard rigid containers take up valuable space when empty, increasing return freight costs. This foldable design solves that by allowing the side panels to collapse flat against the base. It uses a unique interlocking mechanism where long and short side panels hook together, reinforced by steel pipes inserted into the bottom plate slots. This structure maintains high load-bearing capacity during use but folds down significantly for efficient storage and transport. The addition of RFID-ready handles allows for smart supply chain tracking without compromising the structural integrity.

The problem
Traditional rigid plastic or metal containers occupy significant volume even when empty, leading to high return freight costs and inefficient warehouse storage. While some collapsible bins exist, they often suffer from weak locking mechanisms that fail under heavy loads or complex assembly processes that slow down packing operations. There is a need for a container that offers the structural integrity of a rigid box during transport but collapses easily for storage, without requiring separate locking clips or tools.
The solution
This patent describes a foldable box container where the side panels are hinged to the bottom plate. The key innovation lies in the connection between the long and short side panels. When the box is assembled, the long panels slide over the short panels, engaging bayonet sockets on the long panel sides with clamping posts on the short panel sides. Additionally, hooks on the long panels engage with the bases of the short panels to secure the vertical alignment.
The bottom plate features a central protruding slot designed to accept a steel pipe. This pipe runs through the center of the container, providing internal reinforcement against deformation under heavy loads. The periphery of the bottom plate has notches that align with buttress mouth column structures on the upper edges of the side panels, allowing multiple containers to stack securely.

Who it is for
- Logistics companies looking to reduce return freight costs by minimizing the volume of empty containers.
- Manufacturing plants needing durable, reusable containers for moving parts between workstations.
- Retail distribution centers that require stackable containers with integrated tracking capabilities (RFID).
- Agricultural exporters transporting fluids or bulk goods who need reinforced structures to prevent bursting.
How it works
The main parts
| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Bottom Plate | Base structure | Features central slots for steel pipes and peripheral notches for stacking. |
| Long Side Panels | Vertical walls | Equipped with bayonet sockets and hooks; form the longer sides of the box. |
| Short Side Panels | Vertical walls | Equipped with clamping posts; form the shorter sides of the box. |
| Steel Pipe | Reinforcement | Inserted into the bottom plate slot to strengthen the floor against bending. |
| Top Cover | Lid (Optional) | Secured by crenellated structures on panel edges; includes handle grooves. |
| Handles | Grip points | Located on side panels; designed to hold RFID tags or nameplates. |
Operating steps
- Assembly: Lift the long and short side panels from the flat position. Slide the long panels over the short panels so that the bayonet sockets engage the clamping posts.
- Locking: Ensure the hooks on the long panels catch the bases of the short panels, creating a rigid rectangular frame.
- Reinforcement: Insert a steel pipe into the central slot of the bottom plate to enhance load-bearing capacity.
- Stacking: Place another container on top; the buttress mouth columns on the upper edges fit into the notches on the bottom plate of the lower container.
- Folding: To collapse, disengage the hooks and slides, then fold all panels inward toward the bottom plate.

Applications
Industrial Parts Transport
Factories move heavy metal components between stations. The steel pipe reinforcement prevents the bottom from sagging under weight, while the interlocking panels ensure the box stays square during forklift handling.
Agricultural Fluid Handling
Farmers transport liquids or semi-solids like fertilizers. The robust structure resists pressure from inside, and the ability to add a top cover with sealing holes helps contain spills during transit.
Retail Supply Chain Tracking
Distribution centers manage thousands of SKUs. The integrated RFID mounting points on the handles allow automated scanning of entire pallets of containers, speeding up inventory checks without manual label application.
Warehouse Space Optimization
During off-seasons, empty containers are stacked or nested. The folding mechanism reduces the footprint considerably compared to rigid boxes, freeing up valuable shelf space for stocked goods.
Where it is less suitable
- Single-use packaging: The cost of manufacturing this durable, reusable unit is higher than disposable cardboard or thin plastic.
- Extreme temperature environments: The patent does not specify material heat resistance; standard plastics may deform if used near furnaces or freezers without specific material grades.
- Very small items: The minimum dimensions required for the interlocking mechanism make it unsuitable for tiny jewelry or electronic component trays.
Frequently asked questions
How does the folding mechanism work?
The side panels are hinged to the bottom plate. To fold, you disengage the hooks and slide the long panels away from the short panels’ clamping posts. Once unlocked, all four panels fold inward flat against the bottom, minimizing the container’s height for storage.
Why is a steel pipe needed?
The bottom plate has a central slot designed to accept a steel pipe. This pipe acts as an internal beam, preventing the floor from bowing or cracking when heavy items are placed inside. It adds structural rigidity without adding significant weight to the plastic body.
Can these containers be stacked safely?
Yes. The upper edges of the side panels feature buttress mouth column structures. These fit precisely into notches on the bottom surface of the container above it, ensuring stable vertical stacking in warehouses or on trucks.
Is it compatible with RFID tracking?
Yes. The design includes handles on the side panels with specific mounting areas for RFID tags or nameplates. This allows logistics providers to automate inventory management without modifying the container’s structure.
What materials are used?
The patent describes the general structure but does not specify the exact plastic grade. Typically, such containers are made from High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) or Polypropylene (PP) for durability and chemical resistance. Material choice depends on the intended application (food vs. industrial).
Can I get a lid for this container?
Yes. Claim 7 describes an optional top cover. It is secured by aligning holes in the lid with the crenellated structures on the panel edges, using buckling mechanisms to keep it closed during transport.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patent is currently in force in China but has no US counterpart. However, similar folding container designs may be protected by other US patents. We recommend conducting a freedom-to-operate (FTO) search before mass importation or sale in the United States.
