Updated November 1, 2026Multifunctional Pet Backpack with Adjustable Ventilation and Secure Restraint
Standard pet carriers often force a choice between ventilation and security: leave it open and risk escape, close it up and trap heat. This design solves that by decoupling the two functions. It uses a modular soft pad attached via Velcro. When the pet needs air, the pad sticks to the side wall, leaving four leg-extension holes and a cord-locked head opening free. When full containment is required, the pad covers the bottom holes and the cord locks the head opening tight. An internal nylon tether prevents jumping out, making it suitable for active cats or small dogs during transit.

The problem
Many pet backpacks suffer from a binary trade-off in ventilation and security. Owners either keep the bag fully closed, which restricts airflow and causes anxiety for the animal, or they open large flaps, risking escape if the pet jumps or pushes against the zipper. Additionally, standard zippers can be manipulated by clever cats or dogs, and fixed-size openings do not accommodate different breed sizes, leading to either loose fits that allow paws to slip out or tight fits that cause discomfort. There is also a lack of integrated restraint systems, requiring separate leashes that tangle or fail to secure the animal within the carrier itself.
The solution
- Backpack Body (1) forms the main chamber, featuring a specific internal layout for ventilation management.
- Extension Holes (9): Four holes are located at the inner bottom end, allowing the pet’s legs to extend outward when the bag is worn or placed.
- Velcro System (10): Strips are placed on the inner bottom and the inner side walls. A Soft Pad (11) can attach to either location.
- Mode A (Ventilated): The pad attaches to the side Velcro, leaving the bottom holes open for leg extension.
- Mode B (Enclosed): The pad attaches to the bottom Velcro, covering the holes for full containment.
- Head Extension Opening: Located on one side of the body, this opening is fitted with an Elastic Cord Lock (14). The lock mechanism is positioned such that it is difficult for the pet to push open from the inside, allowing owners to adjust the opening size for different head diameters.
- Internal Tether: A Nylon Rope (12) is anchored at the corner of the side and bottom interior, ending in a Loop Buckle (13) that clips onto the pet’s collar.
- Visibility and Airflow: The front face features a Heart-Shaped Opening covered with Breathable Gauze (17), providing light and air exchange.
- Carrying Structure: Includes an integrated Single Shoulder Strap (2), Waist Belts (4, 5), and connecting Rope Straps (8) with Buckles (3, 6) and Rubber Sleeves (15) for load distribution and stability.

Who it is for
- Pet Travel Brands: Companies looking for differentiated features in their carrier lines, specifically targeting anxious pets or those prone to escaping.
- Veterinary Clinics & Groomers: Professionals who need a secure, ventilated way to transport small animals between rooms or vehicles without complex restraints.
- Amazon Sellers: Sellers seeking a product with clear visual selling points (the heart window, the modular pad) that stands out in crowded search results.
- Outdoor Enthusiasts: Hikers or cyclists who carry small pets and need quick adjustments to ventilation based on weather or activity level.
How it works
The main parts

| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Backpack Body | Main structural chamber housing all components. |
| 2 | Shoulder Strap | Integrated single-strap support for carrying. |
| 4, 5 | Waist Belts | Side belts for securing the pack to the user’s body. |
| 8, 15 | Rope & Sleeves | Connects shoulder and waist belts; rubber sleeves add grip/friction. |
| 9 | Extension Holes | Four bottom holes for leg protrusion. |
| 10 | Velcro Strips | Attachment points for the soft pad on sides and bottom. |
| 11 | Soft Pad | Modular cover; sticks to side (vent mode) or bottom (closed mode). |
| 12, 13 | Nylon Rope & Buckle | Internal tether to clip onto pet’s collar. |
| 14 | Elastic Cord Lock | Adjusts the size of the side head opening; resists internal pushing. |
| 17 | Breathable Gauze | Covers the heart-shaped front window. |
| 18, 20 | Fastening Straps | Top straps on the back side that connect to snaps (20) for closure. |
Operating Steps
- Placement: The pet enters the main compartment through the top or side opening.
- Restraint: The owner clips the internal Loop Buckle (13) onto the pet’s collar. This prevents the animal from jumping out even if openings are adjusted.
- Ventilation Adjustment:
- To allow movement: Attach the Soft Pad (11) to the Side Velcro (10). This leaves the Extension Holes (9) uncovered so the pet can rest its paws outside the bag.
- To enclose: Detach the pad from the side and stick it to the Bottom Velcro (10). This covers the holes, creating a sealed environment.
- Head Access: If the pet needs fresh air or visibility, open the Head Extension Opening. Use the Elastic Cord Lock (14) to tighten the rim around the pet’s neck/head. The lock design ensures the pet cannot push it open from inside.
- Carrying: Adjust the Waist Belts (4, 5) and Shoulder Strap (2). Use the Fastening Straps (18) on the back to secure any loose ends or additional layers.

Applications
Urban Commuting
Owners taking subways or buses need compact, secure carriers. The cord-locked head opening allows the cat to peek out and breathe fresh air without the risk of slipping out, while the internal tether adds a second layer of safety against sudden movements in crowded spaces.
Veterinary Visits
Animals are often stressed at clinics. The heart-shaped mesh window lets the pet see its owner, reducing anxiety. The ability to quickly switch the soft pad to cover the bottom holes ensures hygiene and containment when moving from the waiting room to the exam table.
Outdoor Hiking
For trail use, ventilation is critical to prevent overheating. The modular pad system allows hikers to expose the pet’s legs for cooling and balance while walking, then instantly seal the bag if weather turns cold or if passing through areas where the pet must remain contained.
Small Dog Transport
Small dogs often struggle in rigid crates. The flexible backpack structure, combined with the adjustable head opening, accommodates various neck sizes. The waist belts distribute weight evenly, making long carries comfortable for the owner while keeping the dog stable and visible.
Where it is less suitable
- Large Dogs: The structural integrity and strap configuration are designed for small pets; larger animals would exceed the load capacity and comfort limits.
- Extreme Cold Weather: While the pad covers holes, the mesh windows and potential gaps at the cord lock may not provide sufficient insulation for freezing temperatures compared to hard-shell insulated carriers.
- Highly Aggressive Animals: The fabric construction and Velcro closures may not withstand heavy scratching or biting forces from aggressive pets; metal cages are preferred for such cases.
Frequently asked questions
How does the ventilation system work?
The backpack uses a modular approach. There are four holes at the bottom and Velcro strips on both the bottom and side walls. A soft pad can stick to the side wall, leaving the bottom holes open for the pet’s legs to extend. Alternatively, the pad can stick to the bottom, covering the holes for full enclosure. This allows you to switch between “open/active” and “closed/safe” modes quickly.
Is the head opening secure?
Yes. The head opening on the side uses an elastic cord lock. The design positions the lock so that it is difficult for a pet to push it open from the inside using their nose or paws. You can adjust the tightness to fit the pet’s neck comfortably while preventing escape.
Does it have a built-in leash?
It includes an internal nylon rope with a loop buckle. This tether clips onto the pet’s collar or harness inside the backpack. It acts as a secondary safety measure to prevent the animal from jumping out if the main openings are accidentally left partially open.
What materials are used?
The patent describes a fabric body (typically nylon or polyester in commercial versions), Velcro attachments, elastic cords, and metal/plastic buckles. The soft pad is usually made of foam or sponge for comfort. Specific material grades (e.g., denier count) are determined during the manufacturing process.
Can I wash the backpack?
Most components are detachable. The soft pad can be removed. The main body can typically be hand-washed or machine-washed depending on the fabric and hardware choices selected for production. Check the care label provided with the final product.
Why is there a heart-shaped window?
The front features a heart-shaped opening covered with breathable gauze. This provides additional airflow and allows the pet to see out, which can reduce anxiety. It is a structural feature described in Claim 3 of the patent.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patent is currently in force in China. Since there are no US or international family members listed, this specific Chinese patent does not block US imports or sales. However, other US patents may exist in the pet carrier space. We recommend a freedom-to-operate check before mass production to ensure no other IP conflicts.
