About IP2M
IP2M stands for Patent to Manufacturing.
Millions of inventions are published in patent documents every year. Many of them are expired, have lapsed because their fees were not paid, or were only ever filed in one country - which means the design can often be used freely in other markets. Most of these ideas never become products, simply because nobody explains them clearly or takes them to a factory.
What we do
- Research - we screen patents for practical, buildable consumer and trade products and check where they are protected.
- Explain - every patent gets its own plain-language product site: how it works, where it fits, what can be customized and what its legal status is.
- Design - product specifications, materials, packaging and compliance planning for the US market.
- Manufacture - prototypes, pilot runs and volume production.
We also work with patent owners who have a granted patent but no production partner.
How we choose and check patents
Our focus is simple: find good product ideas that are protected only in China - whether the patent is still in force there or has lapsed - and bring them to production for customers in the US and other markets. Every patent on this site goes through the same steps before we write about it:
- Only filed in China. We start from Chinese utility models and granted invention patents whose whole patent family contains Chinese filings only - no US, European, Japanese, Korean or PCT members.
- Legal status. We read the legal events recorded for the patent and state its status plainly: in force, lapsed for non-payment of annual fees, or abandoned.
- Related filings abroad. We look at the documents that cite the patent and similar documents. If the same owner or inventor has filed the same idea outside China, we drop the patent.
- Risk in the US market. We skip product types with heavy US litigation, complex electronics, regulated medical devices and high-risk children’s products.
- Buildable product. We keep patents that describe a clear, physical product that can be made in small batches.
Patents that fail any step are not published. Every page shows the patent number, dates and status, and the date the page was last updated.
Where our data comes from
Patent numbers, dates, owners, inventors, claims, drawings and legal events come from the public patent record, which we access through Google Patents and its public datasets. Drawings on our pages are reproduced from the published patent documents. Product descriptions, use cases and manufacturing notes are written by our team from the patent text; we do not invent test results or performance figures.
What we do not promise
We are not a law firm, and nothing on this site is legal advice. A lapsed patent no longer restricts anyone. A China-only patent that is still in force restricts the design in China, but not in other countries. In every case, other patents may cover similar products. Before volume production in the US, we always recommend a freedom-to-operate (FTO) search by a US patent attorney. See our disclaimer for details.
IP2M is an independent service. We are not affiliated with the owners of the patents featured on this site unless clearly stated, and we do not use their brands.
