About this category

Portable lighting is a large, practical category: flashlights, headlamps, work lights, wearable lights and lamps for camping and the home. Buyers compare brightness and run time, but the products that stand out usually solve a handling problem - where the light is worn, how it is aimed, and whether it stays where it was pointed.

The first patent in this collection is a wrist flashlight designed for night rounds in hospitals. The light sits on a hook-and-loop strap, so both hands stay free and the light is not left behind in a room. A push-push button on the lamp works like a retractable pen: press it and an inner toothed disc slides out of mesh so the lamp turns; press again and the teeth lock it at the new angle, shown on a small dial. The base carries a waterproof switch, a brightness button and a USB charging port.
