Retail displays exist to get a product noticed in the few seconds a shopper spends in front of a shelf. Brands, point-of-purchase (POP) companies and shopper-marketing agencies are always looking for displays that attract attention without a person standing in the aisle, fit standard store shelving and can be rolled out to many stores at a predictable cost.

The first patent in this collection is a motorized shelf unit. A single can, bottle, bag or box is strapped to a small holder on a push rod. When a sensor detects a shopper, a two-arm linkage lifts the product up over the shelf’s price rail and sets it down further forward, facing the aisle, then nudges it back and forth. Lamps light opaque packs from above and bottles from behind, and the unit can count passers-by, play a voice message or project an ad. The second is a portable advertising box: LED bars spin on a motor inside it and draw pictures and text in the air, with content changed by wireless or USB instead of printed posters.

What to look for in this category: retailer fixture and power rules, UL-listed power supplies, FCC authorization for any wireless module, and simple presence sensors rather than cameras to avoid in-store privacy issues.
